Modern Camping
Our family has been camping since my daughter 18 months. No, I am not talking the real roughing it camping= more a modified glamping. Because lets be honest I am not one for sleeping on the ground. We do have a Pop Up camper which is a pop tent with beds, sink, hard top and AC. Did I mention I use a feather bed on my mattress.
How can you get started ? So about 5 years ago I started to take other families that never thought of camping as a way to get away. Times have changed in the camping scene. There are campgrounds that offer so much more then the tent and state parks.
- Many campgrounds now offer options for those without a tent or camper. like a rustic or full cabin. Think of renting a room in the woods so you get the out door experience with the comforts of home.
- Rustic cabins- usually have electric ,Ac, small fridge, tables beds, some have TV’s- usually all in one room- no bathroom you have to walk to the main bathrooms. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
- Deluxe cabins usually have everything at home Ac, TV, Kitchen stocked with cooking pans, tools, Bathroom, separate bed room. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
- Rent an RV
- Also many campgrounds offer other activities besides just a hay ride. Many have become a full resort offering, small water parks, mini golf, go carts, dj on some nights, archery, and permanent bounce houses.

thanks so much, I hope you come back and read about camping more
You almost have me persuaded to go camping. My dh worked with a guy who took his family camping all over the U.S. to see all the cool sites. I’m a little leary about camping since I’m not fond of sleeping outside which is weird because I love nature walks and trail running. I guess I would be with you on the air mattress!
Barb- your comments keep going to my spam folder weird? when you are approved by me a long time ago?? I regress You have to try camping in a cabin your kids would adore it. Noting like a real mattress in the woods. I am always open for advice on making camping more user friendly. I like easy camping vacations.
Seriously look into Yogi Bear.. so close and a great time.
I remember when I was back in college ..my kids were young maybe 5 and 8 and our whole class (about 40 women) all decided we’d go camping. No men. Just us girls. (and my kids). My kids still talk about it and want to know when we’re going back. All the trips to Bermuda, Mexico, Canada, Disney and bare boating…nope they want to go back and go tent camping! a little tiny tent that said it was meant for 4 but barely fit 1 adult (who was much smaller then) and two little kids! It was a great mom/daughter experience and suspect it would be just as great for mom/sons. They learned so much about having fun without all the bells and whistles. Yes, some unknown animal, (hopefully not a bear) got into someone’s food, and it rained one night, and none of us knew anything about starting a campfire… but someone had brought along a ‘camping for idiots’ type guide so we figured it out. It was a great lesson in being independent and learning things outside our comfort zone! We all learned how to pitch our tents and cook on a fire. The food wasn’t great, and like the resourceful woman I am I had back up reservations at a local motel(just in case it was a disaster!) Fortunately it wasn’t! I’d encourage everyone to take their kids camping. Great post btw!
Nancy my kids ask to go camping all the time it is there favorite thing to do as a family. I think because I d-stress so much while away from home. I think I am a better mom away from home. I am so glad that this post brought you back to a favorite time in your kids younger life. Who knows your kids might become campers or weekend warriors.
We love to camp with our kids! We actually took our 2nd camping at 7 weeks old, and I am happy to say I’d do it again. It’s a great way to get kids out in nature and for us adults to break away from technology!
We love it.. I high tech camp since we go so often, and had a permanent camp site (internet and computer). but I don’t do it during the day except the last morning. I find I focus more in the woods. We were actually going to live at our site all summer at one point. The kids love it.
