Child Hunger Ends Here #ChildHunger

disclosureplateKids every kid in the world deserves to have in their  food belly,  but in our land of the free and the home of the brave there are many children who go without.  I think about when times are lean in our home and how my kids are upset about not having the flavor cereal they want.   There  are times I think  at least  they have cereal in the pantry.  These Facts about US Childhood hunger blow me away:

  • More than one in five children in the U.S., including more than one in four Latino children, may not know where their next meal is coming from. That’s nearly 16 million children, a number that could fill 8,000 playgrounds.
  • Children who experience even intermittent struggles with hunger may suffer serious, long-term consequences to their health, well-being and educational achievement. What’s more, being hungry robs kids of the promise of childhood – the ability to play, grow and learn.

ConAgra Foods is partnering with P&G to build a community of people to make a difference and help donate up to 7 million meals through the Child Hunger Ends Here campaign.  I am working as an Ambassador on the Con Angra Child Hunger Ends here.. you might have noticed the little pop up window that showed up when you entered my blog.  That is a place where you too can help those children who go to bed hungry or have empty bellies at school.  How can you help?

  • It’s easy to make a difference! Look for the red pushpin and locate the code found on specially marked ConAgra Foods and P&G products. For each 8-digit code entered at www.ChildHungerEndsHere.com from March-August 2014, ConAgra Foods or P&G, respectively, will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America.
  • Child Hunger Ends Here is proud to work with Grammy-nominated country music artist Hunter Hayes and be the presenting sponsor of his “We’re Not Invisible” tour. For every download of Hunter’s new single, “Invisible,” on iTunes, Child Hunger Ends Here will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to the nation’s leading hunger-relief charity, Feeding America, up to 1 million meals.
  • One of the easiest ways to learn how to get involved is to join the Child Hunger Ends Here Facebook community at Facebook.com/ChildHungerEndsHere or follow the news on Twitter and Instagram at @ChildHungerEnds.
More ways to help! You Tube star Kid President Hunter Hays is helping out and you too can and ask Hunter a question and he might pick you question to answer.

  • •Just enter a code on www.childhungerendshere.com for the chance to ask Hunter Hayes a question. Each month through August 2014, Hunter will personally answer one question (using the winner’s name!) and post the video to the Child Hunger Ends Here Facebook page.
  • •Child Hunger Ends Here will share some suggestions for great questions for Hunter. In July, be thinking about what you want to hear from Hunter about being a role model. Perhaps you want to know the best thing about being a role model? Or the hardest thing? Or maybe how Hunter hopes to leave a mark on the world? Use your imagination!

10 Birthday Surprise ideas for Kids

Unique kids birthday surprise ideas: 10 Great Ways to surprise your child on their birthday and creating a birthday tradition.  Every year since my son has been in school on his birthday I have shown up at school with balloons one for each of year. boy and balloons This year since he is in 7th grade I did  not go to the school with the balloons… (I don’t want to be uncool parent) So instead  the dog and I pick him up at the bus, fully loaded with 13 red balloons.  He still smiles and is happy on his birthday because, it is his special day.  I see me sending balloons to his office when he is 30.. it makes me giggle at the thought.  So for me the balloons have become a birthday tradition in our house.  My kids have come to expect their surprise of balloons and mom making a fool of herself.   As my son gets older I am looking for  new ideas to celebrate his teenage years that are  affordable birthday surprises. Here are some other ways to make you child feel special on there big day!

10 Birthday Surprise ideas for Kids

    1. Balloon at school pick up:  if you wear a costume it makes it extra silly (I wear a superhero cape every year from BabyPop my  superhero cape  store)
    2. Flowers: My daughter has been getting flowers since she has entered kindergarten.  I asked her if she wanted Flower or Balloons a few months before her 6th birthday.  She said flowers.
    3. Decorate house overnight: My friend Hillary does the decorating of the house while her kids are asleep. When they get up the morning of their birthday it is the land of streamers.
    4. Birthday Food: make a favorite meal or breakfast.. When I was a kid one day a year my mom would buy Cookie Crisps cereal .. our birthday cereal and we would also get  our favorite dinner
    5. Birthday Plate: make one at a local ceramics shop like at Color Me Mine  or Hallmark makes one if you can find it
    6. Birthday balloon avalanche from My Dream Sample box
    7. Birthday balloon box form DIYSTUDIO.com
    8. Power of Silly String: This year I attacked him with silly string while he played his new video game.. I also bought 2 other cans so the kids could have a silly string fight in the backyard.. my son said he loved it. My daughter then requested it for her birthday. I loved this idea for Teen birthday surprises. I might have to wake him up with silly string.
    9. Confetti: never underestimate a good mess
    10. Trick Candles or Sparkler candles:  I know this is old school but kids love the ideagirl with flower

Five Tips to Stay Active During the Winter

Five Tips To Stay Active During The Winter

Just because the weather outside might not be ideal, this does not mean you need to be inactive during the winter. Exercising during the winter months is just as important as being active any other time of the year. Do not let the cold air and fewer hours of sunshine get you down. Follow these tips to keep up your motivation, mood and physical activity.

Tip 1: Try a Winter Sport
There is no need to be stuck inside during the winter months because there are so many winter sports for you to try. Find your nearest ski lodge to hit the slopes. There is a reason one piece of exercise equipment is a skiing machine. Other winter sports include ice skating, sledding and snowboarding. If you prefer to stay indoors, look into a volleyball or basketball league. Bowling leagues are also available in the winter so you can be active with friends.

Tip 2: Look Into DVDs
With so many exercise DVDs on the market, you are about guaranteed to find at least one that peaks your interest. From dancing to kickboxing to walking, exercise DVDs allow you to workout at home no matter what the weather is like outside. You could also try strength training, Zumba or yoga workouts. If you want to try before you buy, look at your local library or DVD rental services first for different workouts. Other positives to working out at home is you can do it whenever you have time, no matter the time of the day, and you do not need to spruce up to go somewhere.

Tip 3: Stay Warm Outside
Consider taking your normal warm-weather workouts back outside. These could include walking, running or even simply playing in the snow. Think about building forts with your kids or throwing snowballs at each other. Stay warm outside by packing on layers, including compression leggings, which also help with circulation. These are available at therafirm.com.

Tip 4: Get a Gym Membership
Whether you want to run on the treadmill, use the weight equipment or attend an exercise class, most gyms offer such a wide array of activities that you will never get bored. Some gyms offer club sports or leagues as well.

Tip 5: Set Goals
The best way for you to accomplish anything is to set goals and write them down. Think about what you want to be able to do physically by the end of the winter season. Figure out what it is going to take to get there, and give yourself a timeline. For instance, if you want to run a 5K in the spring, start a program like Couch to 5K a few months beforehand either outside or on your treadmill. You should also set little goals like being able to complete 10 push-ups on your toes, losing 10 pounds or do a pull-up. Make sure your goals are smart, or ones that are specific, measurable, assignable, realistic and time-specific.

Because maintaining good health, especially in the winter, helps your immune system and mood, it is imperative that you remain active during these colder months of the year. Find a time and place to workout, and stick to your goals for sure success.

What is Pinterest?

What is Pinterest?  So I have a friends who ask me what it Pinterest.  Pinterest is a visual bookmarking tool for the web.   So lets say you are surfing the web and you come across an article you would like to refer to later.  You can “Pin it” (Pinterest term for marking a site)  for later use.  You can also add these pins to boards by subjects or categories.  Think of having a virtual filling system that is visual.

Everyday uses…  they are the more obvious ones :

  • Recipes  you can categorize them as type, baking, fish, healthy
  • Crafts  so many great ideas how to remember them,  sewing, knitting
  • Remodeling: kitchen, bath
  • Gardening
  • Car remodel ideas
  • hobbies
  • books you would like to read
  • fitness, running shoes to work out ideas

How can Pinterest help you in your work?

  • Teachers can create idea boards for Lesson plans,  Science, Math, ect.
  • Doctor Nurses: can have ideas for new techniques and articles
  • Sales men : product idea and new/blogs articles written about the items they are selling so easier to share with customers

Pinterest Making life easier: (boards can be shared or viewed, so other people can add to a board) (boards are public unless you make them private)

  • What about present ideas for family members?-  I always find ideas that would be great during the year and by the time the holidays come I forget them.
  • Planning a Trip with family, pin ideas  you can invite people to to view the boards or add them to add to the boards.

7 Good Days- Coping with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

canes on the groundCoping with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: My husband Jeff was 39 when it happened.  His bio meds started to fail after 3 years of good results.  We were Disney World in Florida the 1st time we went as a family, it was  December 2008. My husbands  arthritis came back with vengeance.   He was on Remicade at the time $3200 per bag of the Biologic Drug to keep the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis away- Thank god for insurance.  My husband limped through Disney as his joints and muscles ached from the arthritis.

When we got home Jeff went to the Doctor  they decided to up his Remicade and put the treatments closer together. So every 4 weeks Jeff would go for 8 viles of the Drug $5600.  The remicade stops his over active immune system to hopefully slow down the affects of  the arthritis.

At first the drug infusions would last 2 weeks.. then Jeff would suffer for 2 weeks, until he could get another infusion of the drug. During this period we would schedule our family plans during the 2 weeks  knowing  that Jeff would be mobile enough to participate in our family’s lives.

Then the drug only lasted 7 days..

7 good days to be a family not affect by arthritis.

7 good days..  he could spend time going to his kids events.

7 days of living..

….then the other 21 of pain.

Then April came  drug failed and my husband had a reaction and could no longer get a remicade.  He went in to severe allergic reaction while getting his infusion , oxygen was required.

The 7 good days were lost

Jeff was at the end of the arthritis drug list.  He taken everything the doctors had available and built up immunities to all the current drugs.

He was 39.

The true darkness set in.  My husband went in full arthritis mode.  The “dark days”  or months as I like to call them.   Jeff’s arthritis got so bad he could barely walk.  His feet became huge,  he wore slippers 2 sizes to big,  he could not close his hands, and  Jeff could not climb stairs.  His inflammation levels were off the charts.

Jeff dragged himself to work everyday.. which is why I think,  people believed he was ok. The reason Jeff worked, he was paranoid about loosing health insurance.  At no point during “the dark days”  were things ok.. he would parking Handicap (he had a tag at this point) drag his body to the door with a cane, ride the elevator up and sit at his desk all day.  His co-workers assisting and picking everything up from him at his desk.  They watched him suffer too, his smiling personality gone.

Another reason he worked besides the insurance?  Jeff thought he was too young to stop working and go on disability. He wanted to contribute somehow,  he needed a reason to continue,  and providing for us was it … he wanted to live somehow.

Jeff no longer slept in our bed or tuck in his kids since he could not do stairs.

Jeff asked that he no longer drive or watch the kids.  The reason was he could not help or react if something went wrong, he could not save his own children.

He lost 50 pounds because it he could not cut his food and  hurt to eat,  the arthritis was every where.

The cane was in full use to assist him so he did not fall and the walker was ready to go when he needed  it..

He was 39

Arthritis Affects on our Family:

During that time  I was trying to keep everything “normal”.  I went to hockey practice, dance, worked, and more.   I made dinner every night, cleaned,  did everything.  Including taking care of Jeff.   He need help dressing, showering, and in the bathroom.   I did it all like it was ok, Me ..I normally speak up if I am unhappy,  during this time I existed  never saying a word about how terrible it really was, feeling as people never really got it.  I was dieing inside watching him suffer.

During this period as Jeff’s arthritic caregiver  I questioned everything:   My marriage, my family, my friends, our home, and beliefs.

While Jeff was at work ..I would cry and cry, not want him to see the tears.  I hated the feeling I was having 38 years old destine to be a caregiver for this arthritic man with no end in site.  I gained weight 298lb, stopped taking care of myself,  and existed as a mother. I was also diagnosed with diabetes.. the doctor told me with the stress it could have made me flip the switch from borderline to full Diabetes.  It also explained the depression.  Then the guilt of I am not suffering like him.. so it was not ok to feel sad.

My son age 8 at the time .. who was always close to his father felt pushed away he wanted thing to go back to normal.  He wondered if he would get this .. what Daddy had.  He acted up in school and was good at home to not upset is fragile dad and crumbling mother.   He grew up so fast during this time,  he became more responsible.  That is not the way you want your child to be come responsible  because he has to.   His only wish to go camping and fish with his father..

Jeff saying  “Buddy I cant do it.. I cant walk through the woods”

My heart died a little at the little boys request.

My daughter 3 at the time,  begged to sit on her dads lap , but she could not.   Jeff’s arthritis  set into his rib cage, where the tendons meets the bones,  which also made it hard to breath.  His arthritis was in all his tendons making it difficult to be touched.  I watch as Jeff was crushed telling his little girl she could not sit on his lap.

Hope:

One Sunday in June  after 6 months,  I cracked emotional  at church someone asked me how was Jeff, I lost it, Crying in the hall in front of everyone.  I told the truth.. he was not having anymore 7 good days. We were existing.. I was worried about him, our kids, and I was sad.  The people at church stepped up .. they brought meals to us for 2 months.. hope and happiness returned to our lives.

We started seeing  many of the best doctors in the area,  finally a doctor gave him a newly approved  drug.  It took 6 months to work but Jeff got back in to remission.  He has a better diet, reducing stress, and tries to work out. All which help.

Here is the thing it will be back,  I am realistic.  it scares me terrible to go back to those days.. Arthritis always comes back.   It is a good chance my children will get it also.  We need the Arthritis foundation and researchers  to continue to discover relief and cures.   We need more research and more drugs .. because he is only 42 and He has to walk his daughter down the aisle in 20 years..

World Arthritis Day is Tomorrow October 12, 2012. Please help if you can and raise awareness.

Facing Fears being Vulnerable

Picture Taken By Little Tech Girl

So I have  always lived by one rule.  Never Live Scared. Which gives me a lot of room to try and fail. Yup,  I am that friend that will do something once.  I have been known to get on a plane the same day I booked the ticket- scared alot.. .  Yes,  I have gotten up and sang Karaoke in front of a room of 300 strangers and peers- I shook the whole time.. and sounded like crap.  I went to a 3rd world country by myself alone, took cabs and navigate the county not speaking the language.  Yea that is me in the fountain..Thinking please don’t fall please don’t look too crazy.

When it comes to relationships.  I believe that people are inherently good. I trust easily and get hurt often.. I am that friend that is all I will be there and care for you.  Yea I get disappointed alot by people.  But yet I don’t learn and I trust the next person.. hoping for better, sometimes it makes me sad.. and vulnerable.

Last week, great inspiration for me and my favorite speaker  Brene Brown,  was on Katie Couric’s new talk show.  I first saw Brene at Blissdom in 2011 ,  She was amazing and her words really resonated with me.  I Brene Browns words,  paraphrasing.. “people who are vulnerable leaving themselves open for criticism but at least they try”..  and I will try to be more vulnerable. Read Brenes Brown’s book Daring Greatly  let her words be your guide for living life to the fullest. .. I try to Dare Greatly… or watch Brene Brown’s Ted Video If  you live scared you will miss amazing experiences.. like taking a walk in a fountain.

So this week I am doing another 1st, walking down a Runway as a plus size model at the Fashion Forward conference. Yea it is a little nerve racking… I have had my own fashion designs go down a runway but I never have been on it..  Lets hope I don’t trip or look too big.. if I do ..oh well at least I tried. Because I am enough.  Thanks Brene.

So what is your Runway.. How are you going to be more vulnerable this week, year, life?

annie lennox olympic cermonyWhy did Annie Lennox sing at the closing ceremony? Because Annie Lennox is one of the best  female singers that have ever graced this earth.  She has sold over 80 million record.  Don’t know Annie Lennox work well you should.  She was part of the duo of the Eurythmics. Lennox has been named “The Greatest White Soul Singer Alive by VH1 and on the greatest singer 100 of all times by Rolling Stones.  But why is she total awesome because she never sold out. She has made 4 albums why because she only every wanted to put out music she truly loved. Annie offered her fans only the best of best.  Money was never the driving force behind her music.

I adore Annie Lennox for so many reasons for me in college it was Annie Lennoxs Album Diva that got me through the many sleepless nights of endless sewing projects.  She has always spoke to me the soul in her voice is that of true grace.   The Medusa Album was released it as equaly as amazing earthy and soulful.   Bare her next album is a collection of great songs.

20 Top Tips for Blogging Conference Newbies How to find a tribe?

women sitting in chairs at a conferenceTop tips for Attending a Blogging conference and meeting new people.  It is that time of year many blogging conferences are here in the next few months. For many conference first timers or newbies the conferences scene  can be over whelming. I have attend many conferences,  and I think i am an outgoing person but I do have some trick or  tips I use to make the situation of meeting new people  easier.

20 tips for Blog Conference Newbies to creating your tribe

  1. Follow conference stream prior  to see who is going and get involved with tweeting  before the event
  2. Put your picture (that looks like you) on your business card.  It is smart and memorable,  realtors have been placing pictures on there cards for years, why ? because people remember faces not always names.bussiness cards
  3. Have business cards and hand them to people you meet-  it might feel awkward but it is necessary to be remembered. Also with everyone’s twitter handle and blog names being so similar, make it easy for people to know your name when tweeting they met you.
  4. Do make plans with on-line buddies  prior to connect at a conference aka..  plan a coffee time.
  5. Try to combined rides to airports with other bloggers. I have a friend,  who always says she meets the “new” blogging friends on the taxis to and from airport.
  6. Wear fun Jewelry – I always wear a crazy over the top ring, people know me for it. It is a conversation starter,  more people start a conversation asking me about the rings.  I have a friends who always wears a great necklace,  same reason.  I always have a big ring I spend no more then $15 on them usually $3-$5 and I wear a different one everyday.flower ring on a finger
  7. Be fabulous but be comfortable.. wear clothes you are confident but yourself. If you don’t like yourself in loud prints or your bare arms then don’t wear them because you clothing can make you feel uneasy and throw off your ability to relax.
  8. Wear comfortable shoes- not only because who want to stand, talking, and be uptight. If your feet hurt.. it make you want to go back in your room and soak your feet there is no new friends your hotel suite.
  9. Wear your hair down,  it makes you more approachable for others and feel relaxed ourselves. When you are home running behind kids I understand but you are on “you time” with no kids.  There is a reason the phrase  “let your hair down” was coined. Have Fun.
  10. Bring a fun bright scarf  to wear, people will remember it same as the jewelry but, the conference areas are cold but the outside areas are hot, airlines don’t give blankets, and you can always use it for limbo with your new Friends women posing dressed up for a picturesleeping on a plane
  11. Attend sessions and discussion session with fellow attendees. Talk
  12. Look up from your smart phone- and look people in the eye- where it is acceptable to be looking down at your phone .. you will meet more people if you dont tweet non stop.  I find at conferences and social media events, I tweet less because I am talking more.
  13. Follow the conference Hashtag “#” on twitter, that is your life-line to where and when people moving/doing – then go and see.
  14. Volunteer to pack gift “swag” bags  they are usually done on site the day before a conference starts and the conference organizers always need help.  When you see the tweet saying they are doing the packing.. go help and meet people.
  15. Hang in the common areas do not hide in your room. No one will meet you in your room. Look everyone has a name badge . Feel free to talk to others who have a badge some people that look as out of place as you feel. It is the playground when you are 6 years old,  talk to the girl playing in the sandbox. Once you have a friend then work as a team to add more people.
  16. Ask people who are hanging in the lobby to join you for a meal or drink.. I use “Hey I am heading to dinner want to come?” They might say “I have plans but you are free to join us.. or they might say yea..”  then tweet it out and see if others join you.   I do this all the time, I take a group of 2 and turn it into 10, a large group is great.
  17. Waiting in line at registration or at snack time  is a great way to connect – talk to the person ask:  “Where  are you from? or  What is your blog about?” people love to talk to others and feel less lonely.
  18. Avoid your click.. if you come with friends be sure to branch out.   You traveled to this conference to meet others and learn.
  19. Photos- take the opportunity to take photos with people who’s work you love. If you read a blog and the blogger is there ask if they would not mind a photos or take it with the conference organizers. Don’t say I don’t like my picture .. get comfortable and take them with people it will make your experience so much better.   You are amazing and beautiful so have your picture taken,  you are there for you and to grow.2 women
  20. Smile-  I know it is a simple idea but it really does make you more approachable

I view a conference as the chance to try to be the best person I am.  Not to be scared to talk and meet people.  Listen we are all nervous,  just extend a hand you might meet someone amazing.
