A few weeks ago I wrote about LaBrea campaign for ThanksgivingHeros. I wanted to share about my Thanksgiving Hero with you Nurse Deb. 10 years ago, when I was in the hospital for over a month I met Nurse Deb . I was put in the hospital aka “pregnancy jail” after my doctors determined that I was unable to control my blood pressure on my own = hospital bed rest. I was taken for a weekend, which turned into a 35 days prior to giving birth to my daughter.
This time was hard since we were 2+ hour drive from our closest family. I had very few visitors in the hospital besides my husband and 4 year old son who came a few times a week after work. Needless to say I am social person and there is only so much Judging Amy reruns you can watch on a 13 channel hospital TV system. It was a very lonely time looking at those 4 beige walls.
In enters Nurse Deb, yes I remember her name (because it is the same as my sisters) and she was the most joy filled person I met during my stay. Nurse Deb has a very happy chill vibe – a cross between Phoebe from Friends and Joy from Disney’s “insideout”. This personality is not the norm if you spent any long-term stay in a hospital adult floor, all the “perky” people work on the pediatric floor. Since, I was alone Deb would spend time talking asking about what I was knitting, about my son, or just life stuff, she took a real interest. It was the human connection I was so much in need of I remember being grateful for her visits. She made the poking at prodding more palatable.
I basically sat around as a human incubator for months, every time Deb came to check on me she was patient and not rushed. After my daughter was born, I bumped into Deb in the hospital halls. My daughter was in the NICU for 2 months, Deb again taking an interest asking a ton of questions. I remember Deb saying was very happy to see me alive after the difficult delivery. After just giving birth to a 2.8lb baby and feeling like a failure for not making term-mom guilt. She was the 1st person who made me realize what a gift it was to be alive and everything was going to be OK.
Flash forward 8 years. I am sitting in my moms group meeting and this bubbly mom of 4, nurse walks in. Her husband Rick, is a police officer. The more I talk to her I realize this smiling engaging women is my warden and savior from the pregnancy jail. Over the last few years, I have grown to know her family Deb’s husband and 4 active boys. They don’t always have an easy road with both of them being in public service but they are very happy. Deb works extra during the year and doubles up so she can be with the boys. During the summer Deb and her family spend time exploring the US and bonding. Compassion, Hope, and Love is at the core of Deb’s Family.
When I asked Debbie about her holidays, she told me it has been years since her family has spend a Thanksgiving together. This year she working the day shift on Thanksgiving. I would love for Deb and Rick to have a special memory thanking them for their service. In my experience, Deb did not have to provide a warm smile and sit with me in the hospital but she did because she is true hero.

In my house I have a battery monster. He once was small and now he is tall. This monster was once obsessed with watches that flashed and cars that went beeb beeb. But as the Monster has grown his tastes have changed now he loves orange and blue guns that shoot foam darts, aim his friends when they___.
This Monster He says” but Mom and I need C’s” as he stomps like a giant up a stairs to grab what every makes him glare.
The Little one who also lives in the house She too is a battery monster with many handheld game and furry friends who are not tame, who exhausted the batteries with every cuddle and coo. The little monster is always a fright without out a flashing toy at night.
The noises come from the toy box, at any given point, the bark of a battery dog or croak of a electric frog. As the Mommy Monster questions the lovely toy maker who does not understand he concept of a quieting the band. The batteries monsters friends need an on or off button for the end.

I took over my moms blog for this post. This post is for Old Spice Refresh Manhood. My mom has a hard time with me getting older. Old spice sent me a box of scents to try out. I like the my friends .. tried some out and they like the other ones. It is funny how you get to a certain age then your parents say you start to smell. In healthy class they tell you about it. So when JJill asked me to talk about a True Blue Friend, as part of the true blue collection and contest. I decided to write about my friend Hillary at Myscraps. Hillary is an “adult” friend, you know a person who you become friends with while you’re an adult. We met 3 years ago through blogging. We ran in the same blogging circles for quite sometime, but never new each other twitter acquaintances. I met her the 1st time at a event . About 2 weeks before we met, I heard through social media that Hillary’s husband had a serious healthy issue, he was young, and luckily survived.
The day we finally met, it was her first time out after the traumatic time. I was in awe of her strength, and resolve regarding what her family was recently through. We had a brief chat and that was that. Then, Hillary ordered an item from my online store.. I learned that she lived 3 miles from my home. Wow! how great that a fellow blogger lived so close by. So much to her surprised I hand delivered the item. (Picture me, showing up to her house.. I did not tell her I was coming.) Then I suggested we should drive to events together. That is me, I am a in your face type of person. So we started traveling to blogging events together more and more.
I consider my friendship with Hillary to be unique, then that with my other friends. Most of my friends know me as a bubble positive person. In last few years because of life (job loss, illness, and other issues.) I feel much less bubbly and less positive, because life has been hard. I feel like she has not always gotten the “Good” Sherry, which makes me sad for her, because “fun” Sherry is better … just ask anyone who knew me in college. (Yes I just talked about myself in the 3rd person.)
I feel that really speaks to Hillary’s character as a person, to be close to someone when they are at their lowest is not always easy. One Instance was the day that I found out we were moving 2 hours away. I went to her home, and she hugged me providing support. Thankfully I did not move.
We have a unique friendship because we are very different. Hillary is very creatively organized and a self proclaimed skeptic. Me, I am not organized, more of a dreamer. One thing I cherish about Hillary is when I come up with something kinda scattered she says .. “Now this is why I love you.” She makes makes me pause and think. I embrace that we are so different in the details but agree on so much of the big things. Like today, we noticed we both avoid drama, basically because we don’t have the time.
Hillary is also a true blue friend because she has not know me my entire life. She does not know why I do this or say that, Hillary does not have the long time investment or years of knowing my history. Uniquely, she sticks by me when things are tough, listening, and not judging. I really think you are provided people in your life when you need them. I consider Hillary a true blue gift.
She is a True Blue Friend.

I have a ton of video from my son as a young boy, you know the ones that are on 8mm and sitting collecting dust in the Tv console or in your video recording bag. I feel like the precious child hood memories of my son will be lost. The shelf life on the tapes is short like 5 years.. so is his 1st steps gone? I was always planing to make those precious tapes into a permanent method for viewing. Because someday I hope to put videos on and embarrass my son infront of his friends. I know dare to dream embarrass my child ..the goal of every parent at some point.. usually after they drive you nuts when they are teens.

I was asked by McCormick to create a recipe with 5 ingredients for Taco night. I was compensated to create this recipe, the spices we provided by McCormicks, and the opinions in this post are all mine. So it was a challenge to reinvent what Taco night and to make it with limited ingredients was even harder. I wanted to make an easy recipe that could be prepped ahead, quickly assembled, and heated up on taco night.
I love taco night but sometimes the prep is a ton of work. What I like to do is make dbl batches of Taco meat then freeze 1/2 for later use. Long as you freeze the meat once it is cool, in freeze bag, flat on a tray, and make sure it is loose(crumbly) then it is easy to reheat. So avoid the solid block of meat when freeze cooked taco meat. The McCormick taco season freeze great when make larger batches of meat be sure to use more then one package of McCormick seasoning.
Taco Lasagna :
5 Soft Flour Large Tortillas (to fit your saute pan so 10″)
4 cups of cheddar cheese
McCormick Taco Beef : made with 1 lb of beef and McCormick Taco Season Packet
(1lb of beef if you missed it above–ok so I had 6 ingredients)
1- 14 oz can of black beans
1- 16oz jar Salsa (you can also make your own)
Brown your meat and Drain grease (place a colander in a large bowl and pour meat in to drain grease completely- I place a paper towel under it)
Add taco mix and 3/4 water to make Taco Mix
Open can the of black beans drain off liquid
In a blender or small food processor put beans, 2 tbl of salsa, and 2-3 tbl spoons of McCormicks season taco meat broth(yep right from the pan
Blend to a smooth paste (add McCormick Sicilian Sea Salt and McCormicks Anco Chilli Powered for more of a kick)
Preheat oven to 375
Once meat is thicken up slightly remove from heat.
Taco Lasagna Assembly:
Use clean large saute pan (oven ready) spray with non stick spay
Lay 1st in saute pan Tortilla Cover with McCormick meat and cheese
Next tortilla , cover with salsa and cheese
Next tortilla cover with black beans paste and cheese
Next tortilla cover more McCormick meat and cheese
Next tortilla cover with salsa and cheese
Place in oven for 20-30 min, till top is golden and bubbly
Allow to cool slightly before cutting
