What to Look for when Replacing Windows

Disclosure: I was asked to review Window Nations service,  I received a window for my home opinions in this post are all my own.

Window Nation Replacement Window

Window Nation review: Window Nation is a window provider that sells and installs windows, and doors for your home,  they service several states.   When I was asked to review a window company I was apprehensive a salesman will come to my home.  I was not looking for a high pressure sale.  When the salesman Dave came I did not expect to my pleasure I received an education in windows,  and how they can affect  your home.

Window Nation is big on excellent quality, they have one of the top rated companies in the window industry with an A+ rating.  Also they call for your feedback through out the process to make sure you were pleased with your service.  They want to be the best and are open to suggestions.   A company that listens.

You can loose the majority of heat through the windows in your home.   Dave the Window Nations salesman showed me using a heat lamp and a heat reading sensor how the different types of glass pains and gas can affect the heat that escapes from your house.  The window industry standard  that is 36% heat loss,  my original windows in my home the one I am looking to replace (single pain) window let a whopping  91% of heat loss. This large picture window in  home just think  my window was almost an entire wall, so think how draft my living-room is?    The Window Nation Window heat loss is 23% amazing way lower than the industry standard.  I was impressed to see the demonstration Dave brought- you could feel the heat through the glass on many of the samples,  the  Window Nation window you can not.

Put you hand on your window.. do you feel hot or cold how much heat/cool are your windows letting out?

window heat loss

The salesman Dave was super great he taught me in the last 10 years the window industry has really changed.  10 Years ago my husband I replaced all the windows except this large picture window, so I had some knowledge of what what I did not want.

The first thing Dave taught me was the fit of a windows and insulation is one the most important concern when purchasing a window.  (My old windows my husband measured.) Because if you have a great window, does not fit and it is installed improperly you can loose all heat or air condition just leaks out the sides.

Window Nations windows are fitted to 1/8 of an inch,  they sent a Window Nation Measure Tech who work for at the manufacture to measure the window so it fits perfect.  The salesman is not the same person who measures so your window,  they spend the time in having a person come dbl check the measurements, taken at the original sales call to ensure your replacement windows with be made to your exact home.  I liked the idea measure twice make once.

fitting a custom replacement window being installed

Then the Window Nations installers use a flexible latex insulation (OSI) that creates a seal around the windows that grows, expands, but also shrinks when need with the home.  The latex insulation is important because if you have the wrong foam that expands too much it can actually push out the window,  is what both Dave the salesman and John the installer explained.  It makes sense, your house is change with the whether so should the space around your windows.  Better efficiency better quality.

installing the latex expandable insulation

Window Nation Window that makes it a premium window.    I also learned about the windows and gases in the windows.  Window Nations have a high level of Argon Gas but also a non visual silver lining, and a UV protect-ant so your furniture will not fade.    The lower window frame slants down and away  to make sure that water runs off.  I think this is great I have a friend that said she bought windows and the did not slant away and had major issues with water pooling  not a problem with Nation Window Windows.

window nation window with a slanted ledge so the water does not pool toward your home

Also the glides in the windows allow it to slide easier then others, they are also very durable and cast metal so they don’t break (trust me my other windows have issues with bad glides). Visually the Window Nation windows are lovely the grids in the windows are shaped they are between the layer,  they are not just flat.  The windows tilt out and the screens pop out for easy cleaning

So you can see the difference?

What to expect from Replacement Window Installation:

The called to confirm the time a day prior  then the installer call ed prior to coming,  He was at the begin of the time frame for the installation window.  Window Nations installation team.  John came to install the window with his assistant.   Prior I was asked to more my items away from the window,  I was not able to move my large desk and John worked with me.

removing the old window

The laded down plastic both in and outside the window. The removed my old 1951 window with easy and it was painted in.  The design was the original window we had  the house 2 side windows one large in the middle, I went the same layout with the replacement.   They installed the windows cleaning as they went.  John was in my home for 2 hours installing my window, installation, and then wrapping the window.  It was profession done and nothing was out of place when they left.

window nations installer wrapping the windows

The Result :

We have lived with our new Window Nation  window for the month.   Hello beautiful view !  Out my beautiful window,  where I sit at my desk everyday enjoying my windows that open, and I can close them to keep out the heat.  I am never driven out by the rays of the sun because the heat stays outside on a 90 degree day.     The week in April the window was installed the the temperature dropped into the 30’s.

The first night my husband came home he from work  said “WOW,  I can feel the difference it is less drafty.”

It has made a huge difference in our electric bill and how much more we enjoy our home.  I seriously want them to come back at some point and replace the windows I replaced 10 years ago.  All I can say is amazing change in our home thanks to Window Nation,  it is the prettiest and largest window in our home great job.

Old Spice HolliSpray Toy Drive #SmellcometoManhood

old spice disclosureSmellcometomanhood_1661Old Spice Hollispray Exchange Toy Drive  So the last 2 weeks have been very busy with shopping and working and the Old spice Toy Drive I wrote about a few weeks ago.  If you missed the post the purpose was to exchange the unwanted, gentle used , clean toys for a can of old spice.  The purpose was to keep the toys out of land fils and get them into less fortunate childrens hands this holiday season.

So how did  The Exchange toy drive was a huge success everyone in our family helped and got in on  the giving spirit.  We place our toy bin at a local Church in Abington.

We started out on Sunday by informing everyone about the HolliSpray Toy Exchange  during the church’s potluck and advent craft night.   Everyone pitch in to help us collect toys. Not only did we involve the minster and choir directors, but also the youth the group and nursery school.  My family handed out about 100 fliers but also all the staff  at the church handed out more. My kids told their friends at school.

Then.. the toys started coming… We received donations at the church and calls asking where to drop them off.. it was such fun.  Many people were make room for the new toys that were soon coming.  One family with 5 boys said she learned of the toy drive at the right time.  So were were lucky to receive even a toy kitchen.

We handed a many can of Old Spice out to the families for exchanging the toys.  It is such a great way to keep the toys out of the landfills. old spice

We also asked the Boys what was there favorite scent this Holiday season –  Timber was there favorite scent this winter.. Many of the Men and Teens said they Love the Old Spice spray. The said be sure to follow the cans directions.  You can watch our video of How not to over spray the Old Spice here.  The women it brought back memories of there childhood of them giving the Old spice to there Dads or Grand Dads.  The new smells are so Fantastic it is not the memory’s of men from the past but the Men of the future.. many of the girl freinds had not idea that was the scent they enjoyed on there men.  For once men were in the Know on what makes a great scent Old Spice. oldspice_6634

We brought the toys home and cleaned them all,  so the Second Chance toys did not have to do it.  The kids had a great time my daughter loved making sure all the plastic toys were ready for there new home. She really got into the giving spirit.  I was cleaning the toy kitchen in the my Kitchen  which made me chuckle.

SmellcometoManhood_1_013_001-7

My son who is defiantly #smellcometomanhood man child .. was the heavy lifter during the project really loved giving the toys a new home I also think he really like trying out all the toys..toy drive worker

So many families were generous and I was so surprised how many toys looks brand new. The lovely thinks is many of these toys will get a great second chance in a new home making another kids smile.  I was actually able to deliver the toys directly to the center which will be using the toys.  When I dropped the toys off the director at the Lutheran Children’s and Family Services was so pleased because she says many of these kids will love playing and learning with so many of these toys. children services

The Result of our HolliSpray Exchange for Toys ?  We ended up collection close to 100 toys that was about 7 box/bags.  The donators were so generous and the charity loved getting the Second Chance toys.  My kids really did learn that it is far better then to receive.   Old Spice Toy drive was going on around the country.

Nationally The Holli Exchange:   At Hollywood High California Old spice was there with Holli Ambassadors Nolan Gould of ABC’s acclaimed hit comedy, “Modern Family,” and Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa to act as HoliSPRAY Toy Donation Exchange Ambassadors. On Dec. 10, Gould and Mustafa will host a toy collection event at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, which will serve as one of many toy collection locations across the U.S. participating in the program.  Check out there great Selfie shot:
Isaiah Mustafa, Nolan GouldThe Hollispray Exchange was a great project from my entire family and community to get involved with we can wait to do another drive next year.  Have you thought about bring your son in to man hood by smelling great and giving back to others.  Because what makes a great man is caring about others.

Happy Holidays!

Toy Drive #SmellcometoManhood

old spiceold spice disclosure So this year I am working with OLD Spice as a #HoliSpray Ambassador  collecting toys for Second Chance Toys.   According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, nearly 14 million children in the U.S. – 22 percent of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level.

This is such a great for the world toy exchange!

Inspired by the hilarious moment from the new Old Spice “Dadsong” (:60) TV ad when the dad runs over his son’s childhood toys with a riding lawnmower, signifying his boy’s entry into manhood, the Old Spice HoliSPRAY Exchange is designed to rescue all of those used dump trucks and fire engines to bring joy to the lives of disadvantaged children during the holidays.    Second Chance Toys is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation founded in 2006 to rescue and recycle plastic toys for children in need by donating them to community organizations across the U.S. Second Chance Toys provides individuals and corporate partners like Old Spice with the necessary resources, step-by-step instructions and essential connections with local organizations to receive the donated toys. Since 2006, Second Chance Toys has helped get more than 200,000 gently used plastic toys into the hands of kids in need. For more information, visit secondchancetoys.org.

Truvia & World Food Programme: Sharing a Sweet Future

sponsored post disclosure

I had the opportunity to learn about Truvia support for the World Food Programme launch Sharing a Sweet Future. I learned how one company support can affect the children, community, and a nation.   I learned about the program during a webinar and  new efforts to help world food program in the future.

The Truvia® business launched its “Sharing a Sweet Future” on World Food Day in October 2012 to help reduce childhood hunger in Bolivia and improve communities through better nutrition, safety and education.  Over a three-year period, nearly $1 million in contributions from the Truvia® business will have been used to help develop sustainable communities in Bolivia, a region of critical need with one of the highest rates of nutritional deficiencies in South America.

During the webinar I learned how the addition of really stoves using propane have helped to avoid many injury of children,  When a family with out electric or gas hook up cook they use fire.  The open fire is exposed and many kid play near there mamas feet.  The can get burned,  so thanks to the Wood Food program and Nutiva they are installing stoves that protect and run using propane.

Some of the food being provide is fortified oil,  that adds vitamins and nutrients to the food. Allowing the children to have better meals,  which allows they to focus and study better.  Many of the videos show the different in these children. Nearly 40 percent of the Bolivian population unable to afford adequate food for a healthy life.  65 percent of all rural households in Bolivia are unable to afford the minimum recommended caloric intake.  Truvia recently announced the results from the first two years of its three-year partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme. One major highlight – the program has helped to feed 49,075 Bolivian schoolchildren.  Do you want to learn more about the this amazing effort including more stores of families touched by this program  visit #SweetFuture

So what is next for Truvia,  not that the partnership with World Food Program is coming to an end.  They are going to focus to an area which directly accept the consumers of Turvia,  the US but they need  your help.

Truvia wants you to have a voice in helping choose the organization they partner with in 2015 visit truvia.com/vote to vote for one of these organizations:

  • Feeding America
  • Edible Schoolyard
  • Action for Healthy Kids
  • United Nations World Food Programme and Feed The Children.

So please take a moment click over and vote for the next Truvia food program.  truvia.com/vote   I loved learning about the programs and love to hear about a big company giving back.

Dark Hope by Monica McGurk Book Review

dark hope cover

I was recently asked to review Dark Hope   By Monica McGurk by CleverGirls.  The  Dark Hope: Book One of the Archangel Prophecies  is a teen genre book,  which i s right up my alley since I love simple love, and non violent books that have a fantasy aspect.  This book is a great read.

The Story focuses on Hope Carmichael who is a survivor childhood abduction. The story revels the mystery behind her abduction and her new life as a teen in a new place to her.   This book shows the evolution of Hope and her new friends.  When Hope meets Micheal and  life starts to change.  He overprotective and handsome .. Hope wonders why.  Allowing the reader to  learn to love the relationship between the two characters.

The other story that Monica McGruk weaves  through out the tale is the story of human trafficking and how Hope is affected by a stranger turned friend she meets.   Throughout the story hopes goal is to help and save her new found friend.    Monica does an excellent job of bring this crime of human trafficking to the light for all  teen readers who might not have any knowledge of what happens to the girls through out the world,  in hopes of coming to America and be free.

Hope is a developed as a true hero in the book showing the strength every woman hopes to have at difficult times. I enjoyed that Hope is a independent young women from the start.  She does not lived scared and wants to change the world.  She is a character that can be looked up to by our young women.

The Dark Hope: Book One of the Archangel Prophecies is the first in a series of books, so it does leave you hanging for the next book and so the reader can look forward to Hope’s and Micheal’s next adventure.

I will  also let you know this book references stories of the bible but it is not what I would consider “christian” book.  I would recommended this book to read is teen appropriate and a fast read.    I am looking forward tot he next book in this series.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Celebrating Memories on Grandparents Day

Grandparents day

Grandparents Day is on September 7th:  When I was a little girl I remembering visiting my grandparents whom we call  Mama and Papa.   They are so near and dear to me.  We would travel 40 minutes to Maywood NJ to visit them in the house my mother grew up in.  The street that they lived on dead-ended at the high school basketball court,  I always though it was cool how we could play in the street.

I remember my grandparents home  to a T.  Large Rhododendrons bushes as you entered the slate porch, the white door that stuck in the heat, the living room with salmon colored upholstered couches,  and  lamps with the crystals that reflected the light from the windows like prisms.  I always thought they were diamonds.    The bird collection of ceramic bird in the kitchen bay window, that looked out on to my grandfather perfectly manicured backyard.

The birds- We would add to the bird collection every Christmas,  I think it is a grandparent rule decide on one thing so that your grand kids can give it to you for every holiday, and we did there was about 20 birds.  I still see the road runner bird, they one that started it all,  in my grandmothers assisted living apartment when we go to visit.

I would love visiting them, my Mama and Papa,  who are the same age as my parents now.  They would always make us feel welcome with a big hug.  My Mama always dressed to the nines in a lovely suit and her shoulder length white hair in place.  She was very sophisticated with her frequent trips to New York  to see Broadway play or and art exhibit.   She would often take us with her and expose us to the ballet or a museum. My Mama loves the arts she attended art appreciation classes at the local University up until she was 85,  which I always though was super cool.  My family has always told me, our love of the arts came from the exposure my Mama always gave all of us.   I now expose my children to the arts while thinking of my own upbringing.

One of my adult Mama memories, I was when  she visited me in Florida,

My Mama said “Sherry, If I every have my hair in that tight pin curls be sure to know I lost it.. I never want to be that old” She was talking as age is a state of mind. Even at 95 she is still a classy lady and well spoken.  A great lesson I learned,  that I will always cherish, her wise knowledge.

My grandfather Papa, He was a tall thin man, did not speak with a German accent .. but very German man.   He passed away in is 70’s but one of my fondest memories was when I was a senior in high school. I had a solo in our 250 person high school choir, it was in Hebrew,  we are not Jewish it was the song the director had chosen.   Apparently when I started singing my grandfather was like that is not English??? When I ended I all remember was looking out into the pack audience, see  my Papa standing and cheering for me.   To this day I can still hear his prideful sounds of glee for me.

Bathing your babies : #JOHNSONSBaby #PromiseToBaby

sponsored post disclosurebaby and little boy

When my children were little one of my favorite things was the quite time after a bathing them.  Where I was the center of there happy little world.  My son who is now 13 and taller then me was always a joy.  I would look at this blond hair big blue eyed boy who resembled noting of me.  He was a wonderful combo of my husband and my father.  Who knew I would be so luck to have such a happy little boy.   He was born in February in Florida,  he was early and had a Bilirubin count I remember the Dr. said bring him out into the sunshine.

Every few days, I would bath my blond hair blue-eyed boy or “BlondieBlue” as I called him in the sink,  the smell of Johnson baby shampoo and body wash, still brings me back to those moments.  I always placed a wash cloth warmed with suds and warm water on his chest to keep him happy.  As I washed him, he giggled.  Then wrapping him  on a towel and taking him to his changing table for “massage time”  which he love the feel of the Johnson  moisturizer on his skin ans I rubbed the pink lotion on his feet his legs and arms.  He was all smiles from he loving touch.  I would put him on a diaper them bring him out on the patio and place him in his raised packing play.  The reflection of the light off the pool and the warm breeze smelling of baby waffled through the 80 degree air.  While I enjoyed a minute of new mommy quite and read a book.  It was such a lovely peaceful  moments in our lives.

We moved up to the Northeast goodbye to warm weather and bright sunshine.

Fast forward 4 years … 2 kids bath time routine changed..Yea can, you say assembly line… My daughter was the child who was bathed with us, because I could not figure out the juggle. My husband was the best option for bathing the baby because of his hair on his chest-No slippy wet baby.  Bath time became a 3 ring circus.  My son wanted to shower with my husband also.  So I would stand in the bathroom as he washed my daughter (as I call her Peanut because she was so small)  he would manage handling this baby who loved the shower water on her head.  He would suds her up with Johnson, rinse and repeat.   Then he would hand the Peanut off to me,  I would then add my son age 4 into the shower his dad would scrub him clean with baby shampoo because “no more tears”… Mean while the bathroom would be all fogged up with steam and the smell of Johnson’s Baby shampoo in the air.  I would be laying her on a towel on the floor wrapping up and drying off the Little Peanut girl as she giggled on the floor.   Again even on the floor as I baby massage my new newborn with the pink lotion,  I would listen to my husband and sons conversation about why Tomas was better then Percy.  All before her headed off to work at 9am.

I am still tired thinking about those times in our lives.  Very different moments but I can remember the smell and joy like it was yesterday.

I am glad I had the opportunity to recall these moment by doing this sponsored post for  Johnson’s Baby, who I always felt safe with and continues to put the care and safety of our babies  first:

How to Avoid the Funsukers #CutterRepellents

disclosurecutter bug repellent

I sit I watch lap after lap,  the water splash then calm.. then I hear a buzz.. I see it then the buzz stops.  I smack my forehead but I am too late the vicious vicious creature sucks my blood leaving a welt the size of a quarter.  The welt wakes me up at night  scratching.  How can such a little vicious creature  create such havoc,  they are family funsuckers.Girl using cutter bug repellent

For the month of July every year we live at the pool.. we are there at 8am to 10 am every morning, swim meets 2 twice a week going for about 5 hours.  That’s is right I am a pool Mom.  I watch my kids swim for hours hoping that they will swim a 50 yards in less than 30 seconds.  My family is a swim family,  which means we are near water and heat all summer.  Being out doors all summer there is always a constant companion .. the Mosquitoes and bugs.. which I am in not a fan of of the funsuckers.

My husband Jeff,  I have said in the past is covered in psoriasis-  so the bugs love him,  he is not a fan of them.  He prefers to stay indoors all summer because the bugs tasted for his blood.   But we both support our competitive swimming kids, so the two of us try to make the best of the bugs.  He always carries Cutter® insect repellent in his pocket.,  he actually  has been know to return to the house if he forget his Cutter®,  which is a necessity.

We Keep Cutter® insect repellent  in the Pool Bag, near the back door, bottle near the front door, in the car, and on my husbands person.. I am so not joking really.

I really love the Cutter®  line this season they are so easy to use and perfect from my family with so many great products that are convenient keeping away the FunSuckers: .

  • Cutter® Dry –  Is a spray can and the bug repellent goes on dry and not greasy
  • Cutter® Skinsations – is wonderful,  my daughter and I use it daily when fighting of the bugs in the yard.
  • Cutter® Family Wipes-  are great because they are refreshing and also provide a Insect repellent protection.  They work great when you are in a tight spacial  area like a Ball Game where you don’t want an over spray to hit the people or food around you.

Be sure to check out Cutter® Facebook fanpage for a great giveaway.  http://on.fb.me/VlNAVm  to learn more about products and their “like to win” promotions that happen weekly/bi-weekly in the news feed, making it easy to enter.

Child Hunger Ends Here #ChildHunger

disclosureplateKids every kid in the world deserves to have in their  food belly,  but in our land of the free and the home of the brave there are many children who go without.  I think about when times are lean in our home and how my kids are upset about not having the flavor cereal they want.   There  are times I think  at least  they have cereal in the pantry.  These Facts about US Childhood hunger blow me away:

  • More than one in five children in the U.S., including more than one in four Latino children, may not know where their next meal is coming from. That’s nearly 16 million children, a number that could fill 8,000 playgrounds.
  • Children who experience even intermittent struggles with hunger may suffer serious, long-term consequences to their health, well-being and educational achievement. What’s more, being hungry robs kids of the promise of childhood – the ability to play, grow and learn.

ConAgra Foods is partnering with P&G to build a community of people to make a difference and help donate up to 7 million meals through the Child Hunger Ends Here campaign.  I am working as an Ambassador on the Con Angra Child Hunger Ends here.. you might have noticed the little pop up window that showed up when you entered my blog.  That is a place where you too can help those children who go to bed hungry or have empty bellies at school.  How can you help?
