Tips for Parking at BlogHer12

a car with blogher or bust written on back windowWhere to Parking for BlogHer.  There is a little blogging conference for women in NYC this week.  BlogHer12.  4500 women converge on the Hilton in New York City to connect with learn, meet brands and most important connect with other blogger.  Where as many bloggers fly to New York.  Many of us will drive.  I come in from Philadelphia for this event and will be parking my car as I normally do when I go to New York City.

I drive into New York City and park about 1 to 2 times a month.  My car is a SUV and most park garages are not fond of the large gas guzzlers.   I found one garage to always be accommodating, clean, safe,  and professional is Icon Parking.   Icon parking are well lit professional garages with one of the best web sites to help you navigate to where to park when in NYC.

Icon is also open 24 hours a day.

The Icon website also features a picture of the outside of the different garages making it easier to locate, once you arrive.  Even to make it better there is a free Icon Parking for your  Iphone.   How simple is that!!!

Icon Park also offers Deals and discounts for parking through their site,  so nothing like saving a little money on parking so you can buy more shoes.  Check out the deals Page. These  locations are few minutes walk to the conference,  offering some great deals.

TIP:  Be sure to print out coupon prior to leaving or down load the app! click below

Modern Camping

Our family has been camping since my daughter 18 months.   No,  I am not talking the real roughing it camping= more a modified glamping.  Because lets be honest I am not one for sleeping on the ground.   We do have a Pop Up camper which is a pop tent with beds, sink, hard top and AC. Did I mention I use a feather bed on my mattress.

How can you get started ?   So about 5 years ago I started to take other families that never thought of camping as a way to get away.  Times have changed in the camping scene.  There are campgrounds that offer so much more then the tent and state parks.

  1. Many campgrounds now offer options for those without a tent or camper.  like a rustic or full cabin.  Think of renting a room in the woods so you get the out door experience with the comforts of home.
  2. Rustic cabins- usually have electric ,Ac, small fridge, tables beds, some have TV’s- usually all in one room- no bathroom you have to walk to the main bathrooms. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
  3. Deluxe cabins usually have everything at home Ac, TV, Kitchen stocked with cooking pans, tools, Bathroom, separate bed room. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
  4. Rent an RV
  5. Also many campgrounds offer other activities besides just a hay ride.  Many have become a full resort offering, small water parks, mini golf, go carts, dj on some nights, archery, and permanent bounce houses.

Top Picks for Great Camp Grounds East Coast

  • Yogi Bears JellyStone Camp Grounds–  This is a chain nation wide but our favorite Yogi Bear Quarryville Pa– near Lancaster a great place.  Our family has been there 5 times this last trip with 15 other families  all staying in cabins-  Quarryville  has a water park and tons of things to do.
  • KOA Campgrounds-nation wide chain
  • Frontier Town Located off  3 miles from Ocean City Maryland and 7 miles from the Wild Horses of Assateague Island.  they also have a western show Not to mention you can crab off the Dock. 1 mile from outlets for shopping-  check out the Frontier Town Specials

How I did Atlantic City – What you missed

view of Atlantic CityAtlantic City is a fun town!! I spent the 4th of July in Atlantic city. It was a great time, the kids and I were guest of the Visit AC and the Atlantic City Alliance. If you read my post last week, I discussed what we were going to see :the 4th of July Fireworks, Concert and Duality Light show: Here is what you missed!light show on building
The fireworks Atlantic Cities are rated in the top in the nation. The Fireworks by Grucci and lasted 20+ minutes. It was great they even had smiley faces in the fireworks. The kids loved it and we had a great time watching them,  doing the big Ooos and Ahhs. fireworks
The next part of the night was the Kevin Rudolf concert. Kevin Rudolf, included his hits song “let Rock. Be sure to check Let It Rock on out on you tube.  My daughter loved the concert it was her 1st concert and seeing it from the front was awesome. One of our favorite songs was Welcome World.   I have to say I really his music.. it pop but rock.  It is fun to dance to it. kevin Rudolf on stagekevin Rudolf on stagelittle girl with kevin Rudolf

Then after the show she was able to meet Kevin-  So cool I got a picture too.. I am so a 15 year old girl.

The Most remarkable part of the evening was “Duality” 3D light show by Moment Factory . The Moment factory did a fabulous job on the light show. Which was remarkably produced in 3 months . The bloggers in attendance including myself got to see a behind the scenes look of the production. Here is are a sneak peak of the computer used to run the light system.a computer console
The Duality is a Permanent art insulation that runs every night on boardwalk hall in Atlantic City’s Famed Boardwalk Hall runs every night 2 time an hour and it is really great. The Moment factory Manages to make the hall disappear in the night. Check out the video.

We also got to sat in the lovely Golden Nugget Hotel in the Marina . Newly renovated, with a price tag of $150 million, the spa alone cost 6$ million. They have very some really fabulous restaurant Chart house and The property is owned and operated by Landry’s Restaurants.the pool at the golden nugget
Also the outside pool area is only one of 2 outside pools in Atlantic City and is heated in the winter.
So worth the trip down to Atlantic City to see the show. Also for the kids right near boardwalk hall is located near the Rain Forest Café and Mini golf so you can add more to your trip.

For more photos of my trip check out my Atltantic City Photo Stream from the weekend.

This holiday the Atlantic City Alliance is premiering  a Moment Factory  3d light show “Duality” on the 4th of July at AC Famous Boardwalk hall.  The Aikens clan will be one of the 1st to see the 3d light show.  My kids are so excited,  to prep them for the experience, we have been watching the video of how they make the light show.

20 Top Tips for Blogging Conference Newbies How to find a tribe?

women sitting in chairs at a conferenceTop tips for Attending a Blogging conference and meeting new people.  It is that time of year many blogging conferences are here in the next few months. For many conference first timers or newbies the conferences scene  can be over whelming. I have attend many conferences,  and I think i am an outgoing person but I do have some trick or  tips I use to make the situation of meeting new people  easier.

20 tips for Blog Conference Newbies to creating your tribe

  1. Follow conference stream prior  to see who is going and get involved with tweeting  before the event
  2. Put your picture (that looks like you) on your business card.  It is smart and memorable,  realtors have been placing pictures on there cards for years, why ? because people remember faces not always names.bussiness cards
  3. Have business cards and hand them to people you meet-  it might feel awkward but it is necessary to be remembered. Also with everyone’s twitter handle and blog names being so similar, make it easy for people to know your name when tweeting they met you.
  4. Do make plans with on-line buddies  prior to connect at a conference aka..  plan a coffee time.
  5. Try to combined rides to airports with other bloggers. I have a friend,  who always says she meets the “new” blogging friends on the taxis to and from airport.
  6. Wear fun Jewelry – I always wear a crazy over the top ring, people know me for it. It is a conversation starter,  more people start a conversation asking me about the rings.  I have a friends who always wears a great necklace,  same reason.  I always have a big ring I spend no more then $15 on them usually $3-$5 and I wear a different one everyday.flower ring on a finger
  7. Be fabulous but be comfortable.. wear clothes you are confident but yourself. If you don’t like yourself in loud prints or your bare arms then don’t wear them because you clothing can make you feel uneasy and throw off your ability to relax.
  8. Wear comfortable shoes- not only because who want to stand, talking, and be uptight. If your feet hurt.. it make you want to go back in your room and soak your feet there is no new friends your hotel suite.
  9. Wear your hair down,  it makes you more approachable for others and feel relaxed ourselves. When you are home running behind kids I understand but you are on “you time” with no kids.  There is a reason the phrase  “let your hair down” was coined. Have Fun.
  10. Bring a fun bright scarf  to wear, people will remember it same as the jewelry but, the conference areas are cold but the outside areas are hot, airlines don’t give blankets, and you can always use it for limbo with your new Friends women posing dressed up for a picturesleeping on a plane
  11. Attend sessions and discussion session with fellow attendees. Talk
  12. Look up from your smart phone- and look people in the eye- where it is acceptable to be looking down at your phone .. you will meet more people if you dont tweet non stop.  I find at conferences and social media events, I tweet less because I am talking more.
  13. Follow the conference Hashtag “#” on twitter, that is your life-line to where and when people moving/doing – then go and see.
  14. Volunteer to pack gift “swag” bags  they are usually done on site the day before a conference starts and the conference organizers always need help.  When you see the tweet saying they are doing the packing.. go help and meet people.
  15. Hang in the common areas do not hide in your room. No one will meet you in your room. Look everyone has a name badge . Feel free to talk to others who have a badge some people that look as out of place as you feel. It is the playground when you are 6 years old,  talk to the girl playing in the sandbox. Once you have a friend then work as a team to add more people.
  16. Ask people who are hanging in the lobby to join you for a meal or drink.. I use “Hey I am heading to dinner want to come?” They might say “I have plans but you are free to join us.. or they might say yea..”  then tweet it out and see if others join you.   I do this all the time, I take a group of 2 and turn it into 10, a large group is great.
  17. Waiting in line at registration or at snack time  is a great way to connect – talk to the person ask:  “Where  are you from? or  What is your blog about?” people love to talk to others and feel less lonely.
  18. Avoid your click.. if you come with friends be sure to branch out.   You traveled to this conference to meet others and learn.
  19. Photos- take the opportunity to take photos with people who’s work you love. If you read a blog and the blogger is there ask if they would not mind a photos or take it with the conference organizers. Don’t say I don’t like my picture .. get comfortable and take them with people it will make your experience so much better.   You are amazing and beautiful so have your picture taken,  you are there for you and to grow.2 women
  20. Smile-  I know it is a simple idea but it really does make you more approachable

I view a conference as the chance to try to be the best person I am.  Not to be scared to talk and meet people.  Listen we are all nervous,  just extend a hand you might meet someone amazing.

10 Tips for Monster Trucks Shows

family watching Monster trucksMonster Trucks, yea I saw them.. Advance Auto Part Monster Jam.  Here are my 10 tips of how to make a monster truck show event more fun and what to expect.  I have to say it was a 1st.  My husband went as a child from time to time. Me never been and now I can check it off my list. My friend Hillary at My Scraps was doing a giveaway her winner could not go,  so she was nice enough to share the Monster Jam Tickets with my family.

My son was a little hesitant about the Monster Jam,  because of the noise so we got ear protect for both the kids (the head phone kind that covers entire ear). It was loud.  We saw Monster Jams at the “Link”  Lincoln finical center where the NFL Eagles play football.  So to was open top stadium I could understand that a closed dome would be  deafening. The Monster trucks are loud, to put it mildly.

So we found our seats. they we great 1st row 2nd tier at the 50yard line. There was also no one behind us so we could stand up (handicapped seats were on a platform behind is- over our heads) The kids stood and cheered for the quad racing teams  and different monster trucks.  The truck hold a race to see who gets around the track the fasted that is the 1st half of the show,  the mixing in team quad races with some good old city against city competition. (NYC vs Philly).   The the big show is the free style.. which seemed to be lets see how hard we can push there large trucks just to watch them fall apart of crash.  The crowd loves it.   I was in awe how high the trucks fly in the air and the hang time on these trucks I was able to get 3-5 pictures taken from the time they attempt the jump to when the land.  I was in awe.

iron man monster truck doing a jump

Many of the trucks did back flips here is the World Famous Grave Digger doing a back flip.  He landed on is side on the second flip.

monster truck Grave Digger doing a back flip in the truckIt was a really different evening for my family and it was a really fun event to watch. I wish I brought my telephoto lens.

  2. Ear protection for the kids and yourself
  3. camera with telephoto lens
  4.  Unopened water drinks bring a lot of water  it is hot in the stands (security will not let you carry them in if opened)
  5. arrive early and do attend the pit party if you can – you can see the trucks up close
  6. it is a long day for the kids 5 hours in seats.
  7. Snacks (fruit snacks , little thing kids tend to eat alot, and save the money on the $14 cotton candy)
  8. Poster board signs of favorite trucks, if in the lower tiers the driver might choose them for a special gift
  9. Do let you kids look on line at the trucks prior them having knowledge makes them more excited and enjoy the races
  10.  Tail Gating is acceptable and done.. so make a day of it.
  11. Baby wipes.. added Per comment below

Trying to get away with kids

So this week I am heading to SheStream in Ft. Lauderdale  thanks to ATT my sponsor.  Needless to say it is no easy feet for a mom and a business owner trying to get out the door.  I had to make sure all my orders were sew and shipped prior to me leaving.

I also had to make sure my kids were set up for the week. My daughter has a pick from school.  My son can get to swim team.. list and list for this Mama to leave.

Earlier this week I had such plans,  my flight is leaving on Thursday.  So I was planning to finish everything early and Wednesday  get a tan and my nails done, make a great dinner, tuck my kids in bed and give them lots of love,  a great night sleep..

Back to reality

  • My main sewing machine broke,
  • Dog dragged a flower pot around the house
  • My son had a melt down
  • then my daughter had a meltdown.
  • Then I had a meltdown.
  • I was sewing to Midnight wed night for BabyPop
  • I was doing laundry and packing until the wee hours of the morning…

So much for the best plans…

So now I am sitting airport relaxed..  No matter how crazy and strung out I was is limited.  Because for the next 3 days I am free.

Things I always pack when I travel

  • Bathing suit
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Nail polish remover pads
  • Breath right strips (so I don’t snore with my roommates)
  • A scarf   it can make any out fit look better
  • Assorted jewelry nothing like a big rig to jazz up an out fit
  • Extra business cards
  • Power cord  (I tape my business card so if I forget it)

Things I forgot… toothbrush
