Five Tips To Stay Active During The Winter

Just because the weather outside might not be ideal, this does not mean you need to be inactive during the winter. Exercising during the winter months is just as important as being active any other time of the year. Do not let the cold air and fewer hours of sunshine get you down. Follow these tips to keep up your motivation, mood and physical activity.

Tip 1: Try a Winter Sport
There is no need to be stuck inside during the winter months because there are so many winter sports for you to try. Find your nearest ski lodge to hit the slopes. There is a reason one piece of exercise equipment is a skiing machine. Other winter sports include ice skating, sledding and snowboarding. If you prefer to stay indoors, look into a volleyball or basketball league. Bowling leagues are also available in the winter so you can be active with friends.

Tip 2: Look Into DVDs
With so many exercise DVDs on the market, you are about guaranteed to find at least one that peaks your interest. From dancing to kickboxing to walking, exercise DVDs allow you to workout at home no matter what the weather is like outside. You could also try strength training, Zumba or yoga workouts. If you want to try before you buy, look at your local library or DVD rental services first for different workouts. Other positives to working out at home is you can do it whenever you have time, no matter the time of the day, and you do not need to spruce up to go somewhere.

Tip 3: Stay Warm Outside
Consider taking your normal warm-weather workouts back outside. These could include walking, running or even simply playing in the snow. Think about building forts with your kids or throwing snowballs at each other. Stay warm outside by packing on layers, including compression leggings, which also help with circulation. These are available at therafirm.com.

Tip 4: Get a Gym Membership
Whether you want to run on the treadmill, use the weight equipment or attend an exercise class, most gyms offer such a wide array of activities that you will never get bored. Some gyms offer club sports or leagues as well.

Tip 5: Set Goals
The best way for you to accomplish anything is to set goals and write them down. Think about what you want to be able to do physically by the end of the winter season. Figure out what it is going to take to get there, and give yourself a timeline. For instance, if you want to run a 5K in the spring, start a program like Couch to 5K a few months beforehand either outside or on your treadmill. You should also set little goals like being able to complete 10 push-ups on your toes, losing 10 pounds or do a pull-up. Make sure your goals are smart, or ones that are specific, measurable, assignable, realistic and time-specific.

Because maintaining good health, especially in the winter, helps your immune system and mood, it is imperative that you remain active during these colder months of the year. Find a time and place to workout, and stick to your goals for sure success.
