Sea of Monsters : Movie Review & Book Giveaway

Sea of Monsters : Movie Review This is my family’s review of Sea of monsters. The Character of Percey Jackson returns in the 2nd book and movie of the series  Sea of Monsters. Giveaway of Rick Riordans Books,   National Center Learning Disabilities  has provided me with a box set of the First 3 books of the Percy Series.

PercyJacksonThe basic premiss is that the Half Blood son of Poseidon : Percy  is sent to discover a prophecy and  to save his home camp half blood.  He and his 3 faithful friends head off on a quest to find the gold fleece and save the world.    They travel to the Sea of Monsters on their quests. Along the way, they are met with many characters  from witches, zombies, Cyclops and more  in hopes to find the fleece, save the world and the Olympus gods from destruction from a pre-olympus god.

I have to so say my kids are in love with Rick Riordan books.  So they could not wait to see the Sea of Monsters  movie.  The enjoyed the 1st movie of the series Lighting Thief , Sea of Monsters is the  sequel.  The same actors returned for the lead roles.  Their has been a 3 year span between the original and this movie in the series.  I was concerned the actor Logan Lerman could not pull of a 17 year old boy.   He did not disappoint,  he still had an innocents that made him still prefect for the role.   The actors did look older but it was appropriate, based on the movie story line.

My daughters favorite character returned Alexandra Daddario returned as Annabeth  which made her happy,  For girls Annabeth is a strong character,  she is the daughter of the Goddess of Wisdom  Anabeth  smart, feisty, and beautiful.   In the books she saves the boys from a cursed life ,  that was left out of the movie and both my kids were excited to see her save them,  so yes a little disappointing.  Riordan wrote a strong character my daughter could relate to and the screen writers left her heroism  out to be Saved by a boy in the end.. so read the books.   I did explain to my kids why their favorite part would be left (movie budgets, SGI concerns, movie length) I used it as a teachable moment.. see that is why the book is always better.  (

Many of your others favorite characters return  Like Brandon T Jackson as comic relief satyr  Grover and Percy’s newly found half Cyclops Brother Tyson played by actor Douglas Smith from HBO series Big love.  Smith is loveable and innocent as Tyson and you could not help to love his boyish tendency.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Nathan Fillion  as Hermes.  Fillion is one of my favorite actors on tv Staring in Castle.   He was charming as Hermes and I like seeing him make the jump to the big screen.

Movie Review Sea of Monsters :

All and all the movie was good,  entertaining, and fun to watch with the kids. The effects are great and it is not slow moving at all.  I would say spend your money and see it on the big screen.  GO and SEE IT

Kid it does have fighting, but no real guts.  So I would err on kids under 8 or 9.  I took my son 12 and daughter 8 .. both have read the books,  so it brought the pictures in their heads on the screen. .

Here is my daughter video review of the Movie:

Also here is a trailer of the movie..

So Since I think this is a great book series.  Since Rick Riordon has turn both my kids in to big readers.  I want to offer your kids to read the books. The character of Percy Jackson has dyslexia so does the author of the series Rick Riordan.  Both have inspired children to read. National Center Learning Disabilities  has provided me with a box set of the First 3 books of the Percy Series.

If you suspect your child has a learning disability.  Please visit National Center Learning Disabilities  that are a great place to start learning how to work with schools to get the proper test and help you need to have your childs succeed.   Like a Learning check lists to help  you make the best decision you can and explain the maze that is learning plans.

Adventure Aquarium Review

turtlereview disclosure

Adventure Aquarium is one of my kids favorite places to visit in Philadelphia/Camden area. We can go to the aquarium and spend 5-6 hours exploring the aquatic life.  Our trip this visit was to see the Mighty Mike alligator. My son love him we visited twice.  Mike is a 8ft long weigh over 800lb.  He is large,  when were were visiting  mike move super fast and snapped toward my son which total was cool, according to my son..  I was thank full for 6″ thick  of window.   Mighty Mike will be only at Adventure  aquarium end off August  so be sure to see him.

might mike

My daughter favorite part was the sting ray pool.  At first she was not into touching the sting rays.  Then I slowly talked her into it and she touched them and then was hooked. Check out the video.

I love how Adventure aquarium is wonderful because of the touch tanks. Your kids get up close and personal  with the sting rays, sharks, starfish and more.  The staff at the aquarium is fantastic.  My son was is very inquisitive, the staff member at the shark tank spoke with him for over 20 minutes very patiently answering all of his questions.

I love watching the fish swim  both sharks and other fish.  I find it very peaceful.  The Adventure Aquarium does not fail to deliver on large fish tanks which give everyone a great view of the fish.  We also had a great time visiting the massive shark tanks,  which included the shark tunnel.  fish tank

star fish tank

I love all the little place to discover while you are visiting like this dome window into the large aquarium tank.  Then you turn another Conner and you find something else to discover at the aquarium.  adventure Aqurium

We also are fortunately to be there when they fed the hippos.  It was fun to watch these large animals in the water, they move with such grace.

My family and I really enjoyed the Adventure Aquarium it is one of the best Aquariums I have visited in the on the east coast.  I can recommend you visit and your kids will love the massive amount of touch tank.  So  go and enjoy and visit Might Mike be he leaves.

How To Make Natural Bug Repellent

natural bug sprayHow to make your Natural Bug Repellent So I have been researching natural ways to  avoid mosquitoes and flies from biting my family.  How to make your own  bug repellent ? So during my research I learned flies / mosquitoes hate basil and lavender.  I did more research and learned that witch hazel reduces itching.  So I decided to combined some ingredients and see what will work to deter the pests.

girl picking lavenderI went to a local lavender farm Peace Valley Lavender Farm  in DoyelsTwon PA.  I was talking to the owner and he said you know we never really have a bug issue except for the bees which pollinate our plants.   While at the farm I purchased Lavender oil.  Then I purchased sweet basil oils from a holistic healing shop that carried essential oils.   You can also purchase the essential oil online as well or whole foods.
Basil oil has an anise smell,  which is strong at first then you smell the under tones of lavender in the spray.
Witch Hazel is a anti-inflammatory and helps to reduce itching,  it also helps with pre-existing bites and sunburn to cool the burn.

This spray works great for my family. I like the idea of making a non toxic Natural Bug Repellent

Natural Bug Repellent

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Witch hazel,
  • 2 tbl spoons 95% alcohol,
  • 20 -30 drops Lavender oil,
  • 20-30 drops Basil Oil
  • Spray bottle- which I found at Dollar Treenatural bug spray

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle.
I have attached a PDF for the Labels please print labels on a 8.5 x11  Natural Bug Spray Labels You can print the labels and attach with Modpodge, print on a self-adhesive label, or clear packing tape.

  • This product has been tested on my family and friends.  It does work fantastic for us.  But please use at your own risk.
  • Please note .. dbl check person you are spraying is not allergic to the ingredients.
  • Avoid spraying In eyes
  • Do not drink

I also wanted to let you know if planted  Basil and Lavender around a perimeter  of a home has the same replellant affect.  Lavender does attract bees the month they bloom (late June-Aug).   Any variety of either plant Basil or lavender will repel  so  add them to picnic table décor  to keep the pest away from food.basil and lavender plants

Disclosure:  This product has been tested on my family and friends.  It does work for us.  But please use at your own risk.

Beach Memory Jars

Beach Memory Jars

Beach Memory Jars This year when we went to the shore we decided to make memory beach jars  which my sister inlaw found on pintrest.  It is a great Kids Craft. We gave the kids some vintage mason jars and sent them down to the beach to get some sand and  shells.  The kids had a great time choosing. My 12 year old was like awe mom I don’t want to do it .. then he totally got in to the waves to get some pebbles and rocks for his jar. We bought the vintage mason jars with us to the shore you can find them on ebay or at a local vintage shop.

Tools:

  • Mason Jar  Tip: You don’t have to use mason jar you recycle tomato sauce jars
  • sand
  • beach items, shells drift wood
  • bowl
  • colander to strain sand
  • paper/markers
  • Picture

beach memory jar

Instructions:

  • Picture tip: The pictures we tried close and far away,  we both agreed a closer picture looks better.  I got down on to the sand and took this picture of my daughter. It make it look like she is laying on the sand in her jar.
  • We ran to CVS while we were at the shore to get pictures printed.  I actually sent them from my laptop, from the beach house to the local  CVS and picked them up an hour later.  I could choose and edit any photos prior and did not waste any time searching through my photos in store on equipment I was unfamiliar with.   For editing I use PicMonkey which is free. Picture size was 4×6″ landscape picture.

girl laying in the sand

  • When you fill the jars with sand you need 1/4 of a jar of sand.  Then the add the shells, drift wood, and stones,  what ever is memorable for that beach.

  • We also make label with the beach name and year.beach jars

The tricky part was putting all the elements in the jar.

  • I ended using a bowl and strainer/colander  empty our the sand,  adding the sand with a large spoon,
  • Add front label tilting the jar with tongs and adding more sand slowly.
  • Then tilt the sand towards the front and add the picture.
  • Ten add your shells, stones, drift wood, and maybe small toys (legos, trinkets from the boardwalk)

The moms did a beach memory with the entire family.

Prepaid Full Data Phone Great Option for a Teen- Nokia 521 Lumia

Nokia Lumia 521 I have loved using the windows phone in the past, because it sincs up with all my other devices.   So when the Microsoft team wanted to tell me about them bringing a affordable prepaid 4g phone to the market I was like… Let me check it out.  Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone.   Now I know most people shy away from a prepaid phone.  But as a parent I am not so quick to judge.  A pre-paid phone is actually a great option.  I personally use tech as a form of getting things done around my home.  No TV, no computer, or no Phone till this is done?   So think about it  what if the child loses his or her phone for a week.. If you are paying a data package on that Phone .. that is 12.50 a week.. they loose the phone for a month(I am not saying mine or your kids would ever doing something wrong)… Hello $50 gone.  If you use a prepaid phone  nothing lost.   Just Saying.

Also the phone is 4g so no missed or dropped call your will be able to always locate your child. Also Phone tracking apps

What a great entry for your kids.

Also Did I mentions that this Nokia Lumia  521 windows Phone  has all the capabilities of other data phones so it does not skim or miss things.  You can also use parental controls.

Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone

Windows Phone recently launched its first pre-paid, no-contract phone, the Nokia Lumia 521 that runs on T-Mobile. It makes a great gift for Grads on a budget or first-time smartphone users, such as teens. The phone is already at Microsoft Stores for $149.00. Of note, it’s also available at WalMart for $129.00 and at T-Mobile.

·         The Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone is priced under $150 and it’s a T-Mobile exclusive, which means you don’t have to commit to a contract.

  • ·         A great value phone that gives you the ability to determine how much you want to spend on your smartphone bill each month.
  • ·         Comes with Windows Phone 8, so there’s no compromising of smartphone features because it offers a built-in digital camera, voice-guided navigation, Windows Phone top apps and more.
  • ·         The Nokia Lumia 521 is perfect for first-time smartphone users and teens that are testing the water with smartphones, or even as a gift for grads who are trying to stay on a budget.
  • ·         This recent Reuters article also provides some additional details about the phone.

I just want to let you know about an other options as a parent.  My son is new to the world of phones.  We will b e making a phone purchase for my shortly and I am am loving the options with the the Nokia Prepaid.

Disclosure – I did have lunch with Microsoft Representative  to learn about the 521,  which I paid for my own transport and parking. The opinions are my own.

Her First Dance

girl in a poodle skirtWhen I was a little girl my parents had a jukebox in  the garage.  My parents were products of the 50’s.  So my sister and I had birthday parties centered around the 50’s worth late 70’s music.. we danced in the garage.  This past week my daughters school had a school dance that commemorated the 60 years the school has been open. It is being torn down this summer to make way for a new school.  I was excited to find out about the dance.  My daughter could dress in a poodle skirt. Fun times.   I made the skirt the afternoon.  I also had a crinoline I bought for a Christmas dress that was never used.  I also had a poodle and everything to make a skirt..

She was so excited when she got home.girl in a poodle skirtgirl in a poodle skirt

I love watching kids have such a unexpected surprise.

What to expect when your child is Learning to Swim

There is affiliate links in this post

girl swimmingWhat to expect when your child is Learning to Swim. I have a rule my kids must learn to swim.  Here are my recommended ages and ideas on your kids learning to  swimming.   FACT: 2nd leading cause of accidental death of kids under the age of 14 in the US.  10 kids a day die due to drowning.  Also a main reason for me,  my parents and in laws live near lakes and ponds.  I have pushed the issue of swimming the 1st sport my kids had to learn, no soccer, or t-ball till they had knowledge in the water.  Not only is swimming a safety issue but it is a great sport for a lifetime.  You can swim from a year till you are 100+.

So a few years ago I wrote my safety tips on swimming.  I urge you to read it.

This year my 8 year old daughter has found her swimming ablity,  a parent it is lovely to watch.  My son 12 who as been swimming for year took the spring session off of swimming but admitted to me last night that he misses the regular exercise and being in the water.

When you child becomes a regular swimmer several things happens:

  • Routine  they swim on a regular basis they come to expect it
  • Water confidence but also a respect for the water – realistic fear of water
  • Improves on  concentration: Swimming is a sport where you have to concentrate or you drown
  • Swimmer make better students  Studies have show that on average swimmers had a better grade point average  then other sports
  • Self Reliance you are competing against yourself and others to get a better time.  You are against yourself ultimately
  • Caloric intake goes up at 1st then slows down over time.

mom and baby in poolThe best way to really get a kids swimming is not the weekly lessons at the YMCA.  Where as they are great to get your child familiar with the water and hour 1/2 week will not make a strong swimmer anytime soon it is fine for under 4 years of age.  If you can find a local summer program like at a local pool,  that has lessons  every day and you follow through on a regular basis with will stick for a lifetime.

What to expect when your child is Learning to Swim:

Swimming age 1-2 years What to expect: I promote my child / baby getting in the water and going under for an early age.  My daughter started getting dunked at 15 months by one of the life guards.  She held her and made it a game-  Lots of smiling.  The result my daughter never was scared of putting her face in the water knowing it would come out.  Also if you get in the water  they love it with you.

Swimming age  3-4 What to expect: Make sure they kick on the wall and blow bubbles in the water continue to be use to the water. Get that face wet- super important.  (Don’t to this—>)  I tried to get my kids to float .. yea it just kind of freaks them out.  Let the kids get familiar with the water on there terms .. Do Not force because they will not progress.  Tip: buy your child Swim Goggles they make a child love to swim  because they can see underwater.

Swimming 4-5 years What to expect:  Start a more independent swimming and don’t expect greatness.  Very few kids total get it right away.  I found many parents think (including me) there kids are great and can do it and push quickly. The kids say I can do it and become disruptive in swim class. Listen to the Swim Teacher and take the ques from them.  Because the know how to teach swimming.  The best thing is to spend as much time at the pool as possible.

***In My Opinion: before your child goes to Kindergarten they are great at everything, at least as a parent I thought he could do everything my little angel and he was the best .. then Kindergarten and reality sets in,  your kids is great at somethings? this is true with your 1st  especially your 1st.. I hate to say it I can always spot a that Parent. Last Year I watch a little girl struggle in a class that was above her level ,  because Dad thought she was/needed to at that Level.  The Swim Teacher said she need to be at a lower level, the Dad said The swim Teacher was wrong, forcing the girl and teacher. The little girl disrupted and cried the entire class.  Taking away from the lesson from the other children.  So listen to your teachers.

Swimming 5-6 Kids What to expect: What to expect  might be progressing on the basic stokes Crawl (aka Freestyle) and Breast stroke (back and fly are harder) .  Breathing and learning how not to stop and stand while take breath is the hard part. Also some kids get the arms then struggle moving the feet.  Girls tend to progress quick then the boys,  They seem to be more coordinated  with arms and feet moving at the same time.  Again look to Swim Teacher.  This is the time that most kids will try to jump off the diving board.  They will be concerned with the deep water. Most swim teaches will catch the children.

Please note my son hated going off the Diving board (I did push the diving board thing-I am no saint) My son fought for a very long time , he did not get the rhythm (of not touch the ground) or go off the till right before 1st grade late Aug.   My son also swam underwater for a very long time(holding his breath) ,  the breathing was a major issue.

Swimming Ages 6-7 What to expect: They really start to get things going, swimming forward, The children start to  understand concepts and try to do them some kids will start really moving forward. They are confidant in the water.

My daughter started swim team at this point (after 1st grade) wanting to be like her older bother.. yea she was slow to cross the pool and I think the life guards were on pins and needles when she swam thinking she was going to drown (she would flail her arms and would not move forward when doing the crawl.)  She was very determined to make it.   I did ask if she could switch to breast stroke because they breath on every stroke making swimming easier. She went from 1.5 minutes to cross the pool with in a month she was able to cross the pool in 38 seconds.

Swimming ages 7-8 What to expect: This is the Sweet spot age the kids really start to get it.  They are confidant and willing to learn.  They have a need to do better and want to improve.   Expose them to the water and you will find amazing things happen quickly.  I call it when things “Click”  they learn how to control their bodies.   If you kids has not started swimming make sure they start at this age because the have the best attitude to learn, swiming that does not come easy for some, and it takes time.

Swimming ages 9-13 What to expect: This is when I find the girls can fly in the water compared to the boys they are more coordinated and  better listeners. Also 11-13 year old girls look like they are years ahead of the boys, because many girls start to develop  with puberty.  There male swimmers who are standouts ..but  the boys tend to screw around more,  they splash each others an rough house.  Also for some reason boys spit water on each other (gross).  Then 11-12 boys they get it and focus more.. After 13 they are developing it is fun to see the dramatic change  that happen with boys in the pool.boy swimming

I have learned from my kids I such as I should never teaching my kids how to swim.  It is best if the Swim Teachers and Coaches teach them. (I learned when my son was 5 –  when he said Mom I can do it and shut me down) I felt it was best to leave the professionals to do it. I just provided praise and support.  I made sure they had oprotunity to learn.   I have spent many years sitting by a local pool.  I am not an expert except years of watching a learn with my kids.

Next week:  be sure to check out my post “So your Kid want to be on swim Team?   What to expect”
I also want to add if you are looking for Swim gear for your self or your kids check out swimoutlet.com they have the best prices around. I find my favorite Place to Shop On Line for Swim Gear  is SwimOutlet.com   the prices are the best and they have anything a swim family will need.

Strong Mom Empower Summit

sherry aikens and Kerri lee Walsh
Me (Sherry Aikens) and Olympic Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh who was the Keynote Speaker Discussing her experiences as a mother.

Strong Moms Empower Summit  I know that their has been some controversy about the Strong Moms campaign being sponsored or created by Simalac. But the Message which is being said is important regardless to who is speaking.  We need to stop beating an judging other mothers.  Now I have to put aside my feeling about to breastfeed or not to breastfeed, or somewhere in the middle.  Because that is every mothers choice and I am not to make the choice for another women.  It is her child and her baby.  Not mine.

The message was we as mother have to stop judging other mothers,  because their choice is their choice… period.  I agree what might work for me might not work for someone else. So who am I to judge another mother. Regardless, to who is started or pays for the conversation about mom judgement, we are all smart enough to have a conversations and express out ideas or thoughts regardless to who foots the bill.

So what was the conversation about at the Strong Moms Empower summit???

Here are some of the tweets coming out during the summit:

lessons: Stop judging other moms, pick each other up, deal w/stress away from children, be positive & strong & empowered!

“When you don’t have confidence in yourself you are more likely to be critical of others” via

Walk for a moment in her shoes before you judge. We never know the background story from

Children react – both positively and negatively – to parents emotions, facial expressions, tone of voice.

“There is no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one.”

Inspiration via on mothering/judgement: it’s not the stuff we do as mothers that matters, it’s who we are.

I Might Parent Differently Than You – But That Doesn’t Mean I’m Wrong

Agreed! Motherhood should bring us together, not tear us apart. We’re all in this together!

left the summit feeling unstoppable as a woman and as a mother! Thank you for that!

So I think Chantal statement shows how talking no matter who brings us together is what is really important so lets support each other.

I will be straight with you. Simlac was mentioned as the sponsor at the once at the start of the conversation and once thanks them for sponsoring in the end. (no reference to breastfeed or not to breastfeeding.)  There was no formula laid out in samples or anything mentioned.   So was the discussion valid yes,  do we judge as mothers and can we take simple steps to stop the cycle. Yes,  so lets keep talking and see what change can happen.

Disclosure: I was not paid for this post I did receive lunch and a bracelet form BaubleBar (which is too small for me) at this lunch.  The Opinions in this post are my own.

Pancake Art Ideas: Kid Food

pancake drawing

Ideas how to make Pancake art.. talk about a fun activity to do with older kids on a day off school or a weekend morning. Pancake drawing is very easy you need a flat top griddle, Large squeeze bottles, food coloring, and Pancake mix.

I got my 24oz squeeze bottle at a restaurant supply store for $6.00 for all 6 bottles. I  choose the large bottles so they were easy to clean (the ones I bought were dishwasher safe).

This is the art we created,  my husband did the owl.  I did the flower, palm tree, and Turtle.  My son did the large flower.pancake art

KID TIP: I recommend this project for a kid over 8 and supervised since you are dealing with a HOT surface

Ingredients:

  • Pancake mix – add water kind
  • water
  • food coloring
  • powdered cocoa (for brown)
  • Non Stick spray

Tools:

  1. Make pancake mix in a separate bowl  I used add water pancake mix so I could adjust the thickness too thin it runs too thick it wont come out of the bottle (think thick homemade ranch dressing)
  2. Pour pancake mix in to squeeze bottlessqueeze bottles filled with colored Pankcake batter
  3. Add food color or powdered cocoa for brown , replace top, cover with finger and shake (It will spit out a little from pressure of shaking)
  4. Turn on electric griddle on low temperature setting while creating art,  so to not over cook/burn before done
  5. Spray Griddle with non stick spray
  6. Start drawing  NOTE if the squeeze bottle clogs smack bottom on table, use toothpick, or add more water if needed.
  7. You have to build the pancake art picture in reverse, (see I wrote love backwards and put it down 1st)pancake word on a griddle
  8. Then draw the next layerpancake
  9. Then fill in with a background color  to hold the drawing together.
  10. Turn the electric griddle to a high temp to cook the pancake.
  11. Wait for the pancake to bubble and dry out before flipping (check stability of pancake art before flipping you can add more mix behind the art to insure stability)pancake with love written on it

This is my daughter house:girl making pancake art

Great way to teach a kid to think differently about layers.  Eatable art for a fun morning.
