Who is Driving your Kid?

school busWho is driving your kids? So lately I have been wondering who I leave my kids in the hands of. Like the school bus.   Now I know my district does a a good job of doing background check and working with the bus company to make sure the individuals who are driving the bus are not predators and criminals.

But I cant stand the start of school such Bus anxiety  for parents students and drivers.

This week  I have heard the following stories:

Problems:

A 5 grader new to the district got off at the wrong stop,  she missed her stop, it was Tues.  The girl stood outside in the rain and wait for her mom to pick her up 2 hours later because she did not know where she was. The little girl could have went to someones home but with stranger danger, she did not.  My son said she was really nice. Shouldn’t the bus driver should have been aware who was getting on and off- training?

This morning I ended up driving my son friend to school mom works.. because the bus did not show up to pick him up.

Our sons bus came 15 minutes early to pick up the kids because he was driving by and saw them standing out if I was not early we would have missed the bus.. Why do they have a bus schedule?

Positive:

But on the flip side I was very happy with our bus driver and how a bully situation was handled on he bus this week.   He actually pulled over the bus.   Parents also backed him up- Great Job

I realize being a bus driver is one of the hardest jobs.  Because you are transporting many kids with many personality.  It is a lot to juggle  while operating a large vehicle.  There primary concern is getting kids home safely.

How do you deal with bus issues?

HERSHEY’S CAMP BONDFIRE & RECIPES

smoresCrackling fire, smell of sweet marshmallow, and smooth HERSHEYS chocolate.  That is the smell, taste of outdoors for me, every since I was a little girl camping with my family.  I always know I have arrived in the woods for relaxation and good times, once the HERSHEYS hits my mouth.girl eating a smore

I prefer a s’more cooked to my prefect specifications which are: the hot golden toasted  marshmallow, laid on a cold firm just taken out of the cooler HERSHEYS chocolate bar. When I bite my bonfire creation; it is the crunch of the gram cracker, the goo of mellow and firm snap of the HERSHEYS.  My mouth is drooling at the thought.girl eating a smore

My daughter she loves to blacken the marshmallow (catch on fire) then blowing out the flames, then walks toward me for the assembly of her smore with 4 squares  HERSHEY  enough to cover the entire gram cracker evenly.   She will always make more than she can eat.eating a smore

My son eats traditional style smore  but only one and then goes straight to eating the only the HERSHEYS chocolate .

My Husband smores?  hold the marshmallow and gram cracker. Nothing but HERSHEYS

This summer I had the pleasure of camping with 16 families or 61 people. It was the annually church camping trip. Their were 30+ kids with hot pokers all dying to make HERSEYS s’mores.   I was in my camping zone, many kids so everybody was entertained and great bonfire for all. We had  7 bags of marshmallows , 6 boxes of gram crackers, and 12 packages of HERSHEY chocolate.  There was also  was alot of sticky hands and over sweetened kids, nothing like a sugar high 9 o’clock  at night. Here are some pictures:making smores with hershey

The weekend was amazing many smiles and happy kids..also many tears when we left. One of the little kids came up to me the next few week later and asked

“Mrs. Sherry when can you takes us camping again? So we can have some more s’mores?”roasting marshmellows

Here are some add on recipe ideas for your HERSHEY smores;

  • peanut butter, chocolate, marshmallow and gram.
  • instead of gram crackers use chocolate chip cookies
  • add a pinch of seal salt  to the chocolate
  • add caramel on top of the HERSHEY then the marshmallow and gram
  • add a slice of a fresh cut strawberry to your smore
  • a slice of kiwi in the middle

How do you like your Smore?

Thanks for a great HERSHEY’S CAMP BONDFIREhersheys bar

Take me out to the Ball Game #wordfullWednesday

kids at riversharks stadiumLast night we went to the Camden Riversharks game just over the river from Philadelphia.  If you have not been it is a lovely family ball park to go to and local.  We had a great time with friends.  The park is small and just the right size to show your kids what a real game is like.  I love minor leagues and different sports for this reason.  They are reasonably price and geared for a fun night.  Plus the RiverSharks have a great view of Philadelphia.  The stadium was very easy to find,  just right over the Ben Franklin bridge  from Philly. campbells riversharks stadium

TIP:  I noticed on Sept 10th RiverSharks Community Night   bring 3 school supplies to the box office and get a free entrance to the game (free ticket)  the schools supplies are donated to EducationWorks.  Plus if you come at 6:05-7:05 kids under 12 get a voucher that can be redeemed for a Hot Dog,Chips, and water.

For more info about the night  contact Kristin Segers   ksegers@riversharks.com  (that is what the flier said in the bathroom)

Even  my husband was in attendance-  the game went 10 innings and the Camden Riversharks one. guy at baseball game

This was my 1st time going to a Riversharks game.  My family has been one other time without me.  It is a fun game I loved going with a large group.  each kid had a friend and I felt comfortable with them going to bathroom in groups or getting a drink (my son is 11).  I like that about this stadium,  I could see them from where we were sitting.  We also had space to spread out,  we were there mid week. I was a great experience and I highly recommend it.

Zylie the Bear Review

girls teddy bear Recently I was sent to review a Girl Teddy Bear from Zylie the Bear.  Zylie the bear is a styles 18″ bear which is a great gift for all those Teddy Girls (teddy bear Boys) in your life that are not into doll but love stuffed animals.  Zylie the Bear is a high quality dress up bear reviling  that of a top stuff animals made in Europe.  Zylie the bear is a amazing.  She comes full dressed in high quality clothes.  She is complete with her own story book and accessories.

Once my daughter opened the box I knew we found a jem in Zylie the bear.  My daughter is not a doll girl she always wants stuffed animals so the Zylie the Bear is ultimate stuffed Teddy Bear Doll companion for her.

Zylie the Bear’s story is about her adventures all over the world.  She is a metropolitan bear,  living in New York City with her aunt.  The creators of Zylie were sure to make a real story behind the bear.  So your child can relate and base there play with a starting story then your child can add to the adventure with Zylie.  Zyile also had a friend Shen a Panda bear she meets on her travels to china.  Both bears come with there own chapter book.a book being read

The books are great they help to open your child’s mind to enjoy the hours of fun imaginative play that Zylie and Shen with explore with your child.  There are many tea parties occurring in our house since Zylie adventure has led her to our home.   The Zylie bear web site offers color pages and many other activities, be sure to check it out.

My daughter Video review of Zylie and Shen:

The bears features are lovely,  the quality is that of a Steif  mixed American girl. Here are some of the features:

Both bears:

  • Legs jointed parts as high quality tufted  fur
  • Their own Story Book (2 different book one for each teddy)
  • Pas port
  • Packaged in there own keepsake box so the bear can be store properly- overtime these teddys are a heirloom teddy

Zylies the Girls Bear girl bear

  • Zylie’s jacket is lined with a lovely satin
  • Jacket us a love wool fabric,  that the collar has an underlining of a cotton for a truly finished quality
  • The printed  pattern of Zylie’s shirt was great modern feel.
  • Zylie’s skinny jeans are made beautifully with button details  at the bottom
  • Her purse was made of 2 different fabrics
  • Her notebook/diary was actually stitch together
  • She also has a passport and map-  which my daughter loved she kept open and closing it use them as props in her play.

Shen’s the Boy Bear stuffed panda bear in a leather jacket

  • Leather like jacket so well made with  the closure details
  • Shen’s shirt is modern touching on the current color-blocked trend complete with buttons
  • His khaki were right off the runway
  • I was most impressed with the detail on Shen’s backpack – complete with zipper, 2 different fabric and bungee cord.
  • Shen Drum sticks were perfectly to scale and feel of real drum sticksteddy bears with a girl playing

Details, Details,  Details  of the Zylie and Shen are amazing.  I spent 20 years in high quality apparel design and manufacturing in my former life, so I understand making garments.   I was very excited to see the quality of these Teddy Bears.  No detail was left off by designer Katie Fong in either Shens or Zylies outfit.   You can also add to these your Girl Bears (or boy) for both Zylie and Shen additional other outfits to have a more complete wardrobe. Like Zylie has a My Fair Linen  outfit that I can’t wait to get my daughter.   It will be fun  to build her collection for birthdays and holidays.

Tip: Also because Zylie and Shen are 18″ teddy dolls they fit in to all your American Girl and other 18″ doll clothes so they are interchangeable  if you already have a collection of of American Girl, the clothes will get additional use.

Age:  The company recommends 3+   I think that 6 and up  is appropriate because of the changing of the clothes, to help promote independent play.

Price:

Zylie is $50 for the start kit it also is  currently on sale on Amazon for under $35.69  Zylie the bear.

Zylie’s  clothes run about $20 outfit.

Shen the bear is $50 currently on amazon.

I would high recommend Zylie the Bear and Shen as the a great holiday birthday gift,  I would buy early to make sure you dont miss out on this amazing friend for your child.

Search amazon now for the Adventures of Zylie the bear

Pony Royale Party

This post is sponsored by Pony Royale. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

pictures of the pony

Last Friday I had a Pony Royale party.  I invited 10 girls to my house for the party.  What are the Pony Royale a fun toy line of ponies that are blended with a love of fashion.  Each pony comes with inter changeable tails, manes, and out fits so you child can be creative with how her pony looks. The ponies are based around birthstones.  The girls at the party had a fun time learning about the ponies and find they horse that goes with there birth stone.

We had the girls pick out their horses, decorative them. We then made picture frames with glittery stones just like the horses.  We also did glitter tattoo so the girls sparkled like the horses.   When both girl and pony were fashion ready, we had a fashion show with the horses.pictures of the pony party

Then each girl had there own photo shoot with their horse s we took pictures of them and their horses for the wonderfully birthstone frames.

The girls loved the ponies which Pony Royale combines favorite play patterns – hair play, fashion play and nurturing play. Check out the video of the girls playing and sharing about the ponys.

My daughter played all day then woke up the next morning and played.  We even ended up bring the ponies to her brothers swim meet.  She loved brushing and styling the horse.  She is a Horse girl and add the glittery and glam of  the Pony Royale horses she was thrilled.  I have seen many of the moms, since the party,  and all of them were telling me how much the girls love them and played with the hours of independent play.   The girls love knowing that they could add to the collection and loved the story of the horses.

The full collection, featuring 12 Princess Ponies, all with the ability to mix-and-match their manes, tails and fashion pieces, will hit store shelves in late July at Toys R Us.  Price $15.00 perfect birthday gift price.

Visit the Pony Royale website for more information. Pony Royale will be available starting in late August, exclusively at Toys R Us. Meanwhile, be sure to check out Pony Royale’s Facebook page and follow them on Twitter!

Wiggles 3d Game review

army vs alliens gameWiggles 3d was nice enough to send me 2 games to Review.  I has a guest writer review the games and let me know what she thought of the 2 games. Army vs. Aliens and Space Checkers.  Enjoy the Review of wiggles newest games.

Army vs. Aliens Game   Review:

Army vs. Aliens is made by Wiggles 3D. Army vs. Aliens is a game of luck and strategy.

–          2 players, ages 8+

–          SRP: $15.99

It is for two people to and one person is the Army and the other is the Aliens. There are two strategy cards. Each person rolls their dice at the same time and whoever army or alien is stronger, wins the battle. There a four different game play zones. There are attack, rally, winning and draw. There are different variation in play, my son (who has Aspergers) had decided to have his sister play with him. They each rolled the dice and separate them into different categories and used the card to determine which dice they could eliminate.

It is a challenging fame to play. But my children had a blast playing it.kids playing a board game

Space Checkers Game Review:

Space Checkers is made by Wiggles 3D. It is for 2-4 players.

–          2-4 players, ages 6+

–          SRP: $15.99

The object of the game is to collect 10 opponents’ pawns, before any other person. Players pick which space alien they want to be Ixithan Empire- green, Kanaloan Alliance-yellow, Mechanoid Armada- blue, or Formic Coomcine- red. It is played just like checkers. There is a “moving in the wild area”. Where a pawn can come any direction no matter what the dice says. When your pawn is at the end of a playing area  and has more spaces to move you can “wrap” to the opposite side to finish their moves up. So you win the game by being the first to collect ten pawns from your opponents.

Disclosure:  The games were provided for review by Wiggles 3d .  The opinions in these post are true and honest.

10 Ways to Avoid Abduction and Stranger Danger

hand reaching for a little girl10 Ways to protect your kids from Abduction and stranger danger.  So this Wednesday,  a very serious situation happened in south Philadelphia.  An attempted abduction of a 10 year old girl walking with her brother, she fought off her attacker and he left her alone. Great Girl!!  Everything was caught on video tape you can watch the attempted abduction happen below.

**NOTE:  It is alarming graphic video so avoid watching it with your children- they cant process the images as an adult would.

What did the 10year old girl do?  Yell Bite, Scratch, kick, and scream.   Everything  you hope your child would do in this situation.   But would your have done the same ?

Yesterday,  I was asked to have a discussion with Tracey Donaldson from NBC10 and other local mommy bloggers Hillary from My Scraps,  Karla from BellyButtonBoutique and Linda from FrugalPhillyMom  about this scary situation.   How does this affect your parenting and how are you going to talk to your kids about this?

View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

I think, I live in a safe area, this does not happen where I live?  Right???  True South Philly is 45 minutes from my home,  but the perpetrator was from North Philly 10 minutes from my home. The parent of the little girl thought they lived in a safe area things like this, never happened there either.

The Truth is Crime and bad people live everywhere.   We must make our kids aware and safe when we are not there.

I did speak with kids prior to going to the interview and ask them what they would do if approached by a stranger  who tries to take them.   My 11 year old son said .. all the right things fight yell.  My 7 year old daughter on the other hand was not sure.  Now my son is away from me,  my daughter not so much, because she is 7. Time for me to talk to her.

I do not want my kids to be scared the world because  has too much to offer.   I think that you can make your kids aware but not scared.   I want my son to walk to the store and experience life. If you read my post about camping I do let the kids be free, (we use the buddy system) Long as they are smart.

This is my strategy with my kids: Stranger Danger (these  tips are for a older kid that is getting more Freedom):

10 Ways to Avoid Abduction and Stranger Danger

  1. Don’t Talk to Strangers
  2. Walk aware  Listen for who and what is around you
  3. Do not walk and text or listen to loud music
  4. Walk in daylight no dark- avoid areas without people
  5. Do Not go near cars  that pull over, do not help people looking for directions.. let an adult help them.
  6. Buddy System
  7. Never go to someone’s house without telling a parent (including a friend)
  8. Teach them how to YELL  low, forceful and PRACTICE (My daughter feels strange practicing yelling all the more reason to do so)
  9. Show them how to fight Tell them it is OK to BITE,HIT,SCRATCH,AND KICK. (let then know to hit in the private areas)
  10. Then run and tell and adult!! Police and Parents are there to protect you.  Most people are good but there are a few bad ones,  you cant tell-  So trust the funny feeling in your gut.

Then Practice Yelling and fighting

Here are some resources I found on Child Safety:

What are your tips?   please share in comments so other readers can learn from you.

Please talk to your kids and make them aware.

Please Note:  The  girl was able to identify her attacker and he is now behind bars awaiting trial. Because of her strength and technology this crime was quickly brought to justice.   She is Amazing!!!

Modern Camping

Our family has been camping since my daughter 18 months.   No,  I am not talking the real roughing it camping= more a modified glamping.  Because lets be honest I am not one for sleeping on the ground.   We do have a Pop Up camper which is a pop tent with beds, sink, hard top and AC. Did I mention I use a feather bed on my mattress.

How can you get started ?   So about 5 years ago I started to take other families that never thought of camping as a way to get away.  Times have changed in the camping scene.  There are campgrounds that offer so much more then the tent and state parks.

  1. Many campgrounds now offer options for those without a tent or camper.  like a rustic or full cabin.  Think of renting a room in the woods so you get the out door experience with the comforts of home.
  2. Rustic cabins- usually have electric ,Ac, small fridge, tables beds, some have TV’s- usually all in one room- no bathroom you have to walk to the main bathrooms. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
  3. Deluxe cabins usually have everything at home Ac, TV, Kitchen stocked with cooking pans, tools, Bathroom, separate bed room. (ask is you have to bring bedding)
  4. Rent an RV
  5. Also many campgrounds offer other activities besides just a hay ride.  Many have become a full resort offering, small water parks, mini golf, go carts, dj on some nights, archery, and permanent bounce houses.

Top Picks for Great Camp Grounds East Coast

  • Yogi Bears JellyStone Camp Grounds–  This is a chain nation wide but our favorite Yogi Bear Quarryville Pa– near Lancaster a great place.  Our family has been there 5 times this last trip with 15 other families  all staying in cabins-  Quarryville  has a water park and tons of things to do.
