Parenting teenage boys : Planting seeds of Parenting

Parenting teenage boys and How to talk to your teenage boy?  All March my husband I would watch promos for the new Fox TV show Surviving Jack.  My husband would say I want to watch that show. The promos would feature Jack Dunlvey  the Dad putting his teenage son through the paces,  as punishment for doing some stupid teenage thing.    My husband being a sarcastic person,  the show was right up his alley.

How does a Tv show help you parenting teenage boys and talk to your teenage boy?  I will get to that..

This show is a coming of age show, set in the 90’s, and  it is a about a Dad  who is a doctor has cut back on his practice to allow his smart wife to go back to school to become a lawyer, he takes over parenting for their 2 teen age kids.  Dad Jack is not a sugar coated kind of guy,  he says what is on his mind and he is also madly in love with his wife.  Jack played by  Christopher Meloni  (from SVU) is perfect for this rolehard ass dad with a soft side.   The Mom played by Rachael Harris is ever present like most moms are and she trys guides Jack, with humor and love.  It dynamic between the 2 characters shows unique humorous coparenting dynamic .

The kids son Frankie played by Connor Buckley with  daughter Rachel played by Claudia Lee  are very talented and  have great comic timing.   Frankie is an 16 year old who sprouted up over the summer and is awkward but coming in on his own,  trying to figure out girls, school, sports.  Rachel is the slightly older sister, who is working the system with smarts and looks.  The casting director did a great job on this show.

After watching a few episodes I get the idea of asking my 13 year old son to watch the show with us.  My son has never really sat and watch a sitcom with us.   He loves it and says it is hysterical ..  Now my son says “Wait to for me watch Surviving Jack.”    My son will laugh at Jack or “OMG” when the son got into something. There is alot of “WHATS” when every Jack does something total outlandish to his son and his friends.

The Best Part of the Show Surviving Jack for us as parents is  watching it with our son,  is my son will also ask questions through the laughter.. like “What is the pill ?”

To which I was more than happy to answer.

“The pill,  is a pill that girls take not to get pregnant but it NOT 100% effective. You still need to use condoms when you have sex”

I call these moments : My seeds of Parenting  to place in his mind.  No full blow discussions need because he is 13 and not there yet in his development (No girls even in the picture,  I think he knows they exist).    Why have a large talk when it just make him feel awkward, plant a seed the big talk will come when needed.

This past week Season Finale of Surviving Jack :  The episode  dealt with 1st time drinking.  This also brought up a discussion with my son.

I said  “I prefer you wouldn’t drink, but if you do call I will pick you up. Be safe be smart,  I will not be mad”

My son  said “Mom! I am like 3 years away from going to a party that has alcohol”

My parenting seeds are planted.

While Watching Surviving Jack : My son does not say “EWE” when he sees how much the parents love each other. In the episode about the Son going to homecoming and the parents not having their “alone time”.  The episode discussed about the parents being sexually active and then not getting it.  Watching it with my son was not award because of the humor.  I thought it was great for him to see/know that parents are human.  That episode had a context he could understand because it ran the parents in tandem with the sons problem.    That is life add humor and it makes for a great TV Show.

Reasons to Watch Surviving Jack:

  • So it shows a healthy relationship where the parents adore each other
  • It shows a man supporting a women’s dreams
  • It shows a loving family, real parenting issues, and a modern humor
  • Touches on subjects that will spur discussion
  • It shows parents are human and make mistakes
  • It shows really teen issues in a humorous way
  • It is set in the 90’s so the clothes are funny but not strange like recent 80’s shows –  where the clothing feels unrelatable to our teens
  • The time period allows for your kids to say was it that way when you were young
  • Repercussions for your actions
  • Humor, Humor Humor

Think Cosbys with a 2014 sarcastic humor.

Thursday Night  May 9th was the last episode to be aired,  that is right Fox Cancelled Surviving Jack.  Because everything good must be squashed.   So I tell you watch it watch it Now… I can highly recommend you watch this on demand or hulu or on streaming video with your kids.

I just told my son the show was cancelled and he said “Why Why” and “Are they going to make more episodes at a different time?

He said that was my favorite show.  I don’t even like TV but that was the best thing I watched n years.. He said I will watch the reruns..

So Watch Surviving Jack … Late is better than never.. I wish FOX would reconsider or another Network would pick up the show. There is a petition to save the show if you want to sign it Surviving Jack Petition   or tweet with the hashtag #BringBackJack

I wanted to write about the show earlier on my blog and I am sorry that I waited to share my family’s love of the show.  Because that is great TV a show that brings people together in fun, laughter and discussion.

I have to say thank you to The Actors, Directors, Writers and Producers of Surviving Jack for giving us another way to connect with my son.

My yummy experiance with blood sausage

blood sausageSo  when Polana asked me to review there products I was intrigued.  When the package arrived I received blood sausage int h package.  I know really it does not sounds well appetizing. Let me tell you I was really surprised how much we loved it.  My family came to visit,  my father was 1/2 polish so I grew up with a very polish last name. and Kielbasi was a large part of family meals always served as an pre-meal meat for most holidays.

My family enjoys many of the polish food.  Blood sausage is not something I remember having as a child,  so I was not sure what to expect while trying.

After Goggling I found out : Blood Sausage is a generic name for cooking blood or dried blood with a filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled.  Then they add filters to the meat to such as grains: wheat rice, barley ect are added  to the meat.

The Polana web sites recommends you cook  the blood sausage (Kaszanka) slow allowing the casings to stay in tact.  Ok so I forgot to read the web site,  l when I cooked the Blood sausage I cut the link in to pieces and and place in the frying pan,  The casing pulled away the the sausage meat fell in the pan.  I cooked slowly allowing the meat to get a a crispy edge.blood sausage and eggs

The result:  My mother and I thoroughly enjoyed it- Yummy-O we both had a hard time stepping away from the plate.  The grains in that was in the Polana Blood Sausage was savory and flavorful.  The Barley gave the sausage a mild corn beef hash consistence  with out the heavy salt.  Both of us said we actually enjoyed it more than corn beef hash.    So I would say defiantly try out the Poland Blood sausage.  Their claim to be the best Kasanka is true.   I had it the next day,  with eggs on top and I was truly happy.

When food makes you happy that is a good thing.

Other products we were able to try:

The Polana Kielbasa: The Kielbasa was fantastic full of meat not fatty. Also not salty,  with a nice mild smoke  pepper balance.  It was a kielbasa I would be proud to share in my home any time of year.  My husband, father and son were all large fans of the Polana Kielbasa.   I have cooked more since the 1st trial day with my parents and everyone asked for seconds. I really felt the quality of the meet was far superior than the Kielbasa you find in your local market and woth the extra cost. sauge and pierogis

My Memories of homemade Potato and Cheese Pierogi  are from when I was in college a had a roommate’s Polish  Mother who made us fresh pierogi when every they visited our apartment.  She would bring us bags of these special doughy treats which we would ration out until the next time they visited us again.    The Polana Potato and Cheese Pierogi brought thos memories back, yummy goodness.  They cost  $8.99 for 12 in a package and they come frozen  Very east to prepare, thaw and place in skillet with some butter.   I loaded them up with onions, because what is a pierogi with out an onion.  cheesecake

Polana: Peach cheese cake : according to the Polana This truly authentic Polish cheesecake is made with a fresh cheese called Quark (or twaróg). Quark is a fresh Eastern European cheese that is much lower in fat content (similar to yogurt) than cream cheese. In addition, Quark cheese has no added salt.  The result: The cheese cake was a different texture from  the traditional NY style cheesecake,  it had a coconut texture to the cake  but I found it was flavorful and called me back for more over the course of the evening. 

How did the Polana Package  arrive?  I was impressed it came in a large Styrofoam cooler packing with materials not allowing for sliding during delivery All the food was frozen solid with dry ice and ready to be placed int he fridge.  Check it out here:polana_packaging_013_001-2polana packaging

The also offer a Stuffed Cabbage and other prepared foods.. I have to say I cant wait to try the Hunters Stew next week it take 2-3 days of cooking time to make it.

Tips on getting childrens ears piercing

girl with earingsChildrens ears piercing:  When I was 8 my mother took me to get my ears pierced.  I will never forget my sister and I went the Rockaway mall to Bejewled a store on the upper level.  They had white seats with chrome arms and orange and pink walls  it was 1979.  My sister and I got them done the same time.  The earring lady sat us down.  Then one ear at a time we had the gun placed to our ears.  Sliver studs.  We we so proud and could not wait till we could wear all the earrings they sold in the store.  My mother made sure we twisted the post every day.  I remember once having to take them out .. the hole started closing up and my mother put the stud back in. ouch!!

So the time came when for my daughters birthday, after months of waiting for her birthday she got her ears pierced.  My mom came down for her birthday so it was perfect we all went it was like a right of passage for her to get her ears done.   So here is a video of that day a year ago,  they did a dual piercing:

My Top Tips on getting children’s ears piercing :

 

  • My daughter was 8 years old I waited because I wanted her to take the the responsibility for the earring.  For us the age 8 was perfect.  I never had to get involved with the daily care of her earring when she got the piercing  for the most part.
  • Try to have both done at the same exact time it avoids they chicken out on the the other ear.  Claries did great!
  • The solution must be used on a regular basis twice a day. Keep them clean
  • Twist the earrings
  • Earrings change after 6 weeks we were told my daughter could switch her earring to another Post/stud earring. We stuck to this.
  • We did not want my daughter ears got pussy  from the cheaper “fun” earring, so we did avoid them.
  • Watch how tight is the earing back.   my daughter became very concerned she would loose the back or the earring them so she pushed the back on to tight.. the ear got sore
  • If the  cheaper earrings hurt take out immediately and switch to better sterling silver studs.
  • “I cant get the earring through the holes mom” She was not great at changing earrings.. she could never get it through the hole.
  • Wait for dangles till 6 months..We did not around month 4,  because of her concerns and cheap earring.. I went and purchased sterling silver mini continuous (tiny) hoops at Target.
  • The little silver hoops solved many problems,  she could swim with them,  her ears could get air so there was no pressure on her ears from the backs.

My advice is wait  till they are 8 and go with little hoops non dangle  after the 5-6 months of the studs.

The Hunger Games 2 DVD : Catching Fire DVD out today

katniss everdeenHunger Games 2: I love the Hunger Games I enjoyed reading all the books, the book are teenage genre but I don’t know an adult who did not love the story.   My son is currently starting the series.  My husband who normally is not a big reader really loved reading them with me.   When the movies came out we have seen all of them together.  I am a huge fan of the movies.   Today they 2nd movie Hunger Games: Catching Fire is released to the public on BluRay  Dvd and digital download. .

In the Hunger Games 2 dvd movie in the series the heroine Katniss Evergreen is settling back into life after winning the violent country appointed “Hunger Games” where kids from ages 12 -18 are picked to fight to the death for the amusement of the capital and make their local colonial proud.   Katiness and her fellow victory Peeta Mellark  trick the capital to keeping both alive at the end of the Hunger Games.  The 2nd movie int he Hunger Games trilogy is about the slow rebellion of the people in the colonies and capitals battle to keep them down.   Personally Katniss role in of being an unwilling figure head of this rebellion.

Jennifer Lawrence is the perfect cast for Katniss Evergreen.  Lawrence’s is a great Heroine,  she plays the role effortless with an inner strength of the  self empowered girl.  Lawerence’s portrayal of struggle,  survival, and just plan stubborn,  is what we have come to expect from Lawrence.. never shy or a weak women.  I think this movie is wonderful in showing our children a positive female that is faced with challenges and personal weaknesses but is persistence with  self reliant attitude.

 Josh Hutcherson  plays  Peeta Mallark and is a wonderful cast as well.  What I love about the Peeta Malark he is shows a silent strength by being their for Katniss unconditional.  He is is supportive and caring.  I feel the role shows that it is ok for the man not to be the star and he allows Katniss/Lawrence to shine.  Hutcherson portrayal is a what you expect of Peeta as described in the books. 

I can recommend this Hunger Games: 2 dvd  Catching Fire  for you to watch with your 12+ child both boy and girl.  Because,  boys should see a strong girl and a supporting man too. I do say a slightly older child because there are some violent moments in the movie.

As other teen books deal with a fawning girl.. Hunger Games does not .. it is positive and strong story so weather you read the book or watch the movie.  Hunger Games is well worth the time.

Nutribullet Smoothie Recipe: Ginger Fig

  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 frozen pineapples chunks
  • 1 dried fig
  • 1 table spoon of grated ginger
  • 1 table spoon of honey
  • 8-12 oz of almond milk or skim milk

Combined all and Blend in Nutribullet.

TIP: I found the figs at at local produce stand when store properly the will be great for months.  I store on a zip lock in my cupboard.  The ginger can keep for month if left whole root in freezer.

A year with my Nutribullet Review:

I have owned my Nutribullet for a year,  it is used daily in our home by both my husband, myself or my kids.   I really love how it makes all the ingredients smooth no chunks of frozen fruit once blended a year after I received the NutriBullet it still blending smoothly.

TIP: You must only fit to the fill line.  Do not go over the fill line because it need space for air to go during the blending process.

I also use mine to make sauces and bases. My son who does not like the texture of onions but like the flavor I will blend the onions in my nutribullet,  so I have a smooth non “onion slimy” consistence.  Also when I use the more smell items (Onion, garlic) the Nutribullet does not hold the flavor of past blends,  so you can never taste the onions in your smoothies.. which is a good thing. After a year I am still satisfied with my Nutribullet.

I make, smoothies, sauce, purees, humus,dips, gravy.

Space It takes little space on my counter.. I keep the large cup and blade out all the time.  I keep the other attachments in a bin on top of my fridge for easy access.
