Great Free Place for kids in Philly : Fairmount Park Waterworks

Great Free Place for kids in Philly : Fairmount Park Waterworks:  I have been living in Philadelphia for the past 11 years after returning after falling in love with Philadelphia during college. There is one special place in Philly that has always been near and dear too my heart the Philadelphia Fairmount Park Water Works.  It is one of the prettiest place  in the city located at the end of Kelly Drive and at behind the Art Museum. Here is a little about the Museum:free place to visit in philly with kid water works

I recently learned that there is a interactive museum that is right in the middle of the waterworks which is free to all.   The have interactive learning, teaching the responsibility to the environment,  the work with the inner city schools to teach the importance of preserving the environment.

The Waterworks museum is run by the The Fairmount Water Works, the ideal location to learn more about the life in and around the river, was constructed in 1812 to pump water from the Schuylkill River. Almost from the day the waterwheels began turning, the graceful neoclassical buildings and beautiful grounds made the place an international tourist attraction renowned for melding nature and technology. Today, the Fairmount Water Works is the Delaware River Basin’s watershed education hub, offering visitors information about the impact of water on their daily lives and how they in turn impact their water supplies. Located off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia’s East Fairmount Park, the Fairmount Water Works features a variety of hands-on, highly interactive exhibits including a live view of the Fairmount Dam fishway and a flyover of the Schuylkill River watershed.

FLOW FEST

September 21, 2014   1pm-dusk

As the Fairmount Water Works—one of Philadelphia’s first tourist attractions—approaches its 200th birthday, it debuts the FLOW Festival. FLOW (For the Love Of Water) is an outdoor showcase of interactive, family-friendly exhibits and activities offering a glimpse into the future of this historic site. On September 21, visitors can “splash up a tune” using water and technology, create rhythms with dripping ice and steel drums, and enjoy a dramatic finale with a Schuylkill-inspired dance performance and a light show illuminating the Fairmount Water Works’ impressive neoclassical architecture. These are just a few of the many exciting activities that await guests during this “makers” festival.

“Anyone who loves the environment, who appreciates history, art and science, or just wants to have fun, will find something at our FLOW Fest,” said Karen Young, Director of Fairmount Water Works. “Through the creativity of local artists, attendees will discover the Water Works’ history and exciting future and the power and mystery of the Schuylkill River.”

From 1 p.m. to dusk, the Fairmount Water Works’ majestic grounds will be packed with all manner of interactive, family-friendly activities, including:

  • Splash Organ – Using the famous piano scene from the movie Big as inspiration, local artist Lee Tusman designed this installation, which uses a simple piece of technology to turn buckets of water into an instrument.
  • Swim the Fishway – With only fabric and wood, local artist Kathryn Sclavi will create a replica of the passageway below the Water Works that allows fish to swim upstream to hatch their eggs. Guests will create their own fish puppet and “swim” it through the display, simulating the fish’s journey.
  • Build a Water Drop – Guests will help create a giant wave sculpture made out of hundreds of interlocking “raindrop” discs.
  • River Net – An oversized fabric installation that depicts the power and essence of the Schuylkill River.
  • Grand Finale Light Show – The festival ends in dramatic fashion with a light show, accompanied by original music and footage, reflecting the poetry and power of the river.

15 Free Hat Easy Patterns for adults : Knitting with one skein

women wearing an easy knit hat

15 Free Hat Easy Patterns for adults : Knitting  I recently was discussing knitting needles on Facebook,  with a friend Rachee.  The discussion was why would you need knitting needles that cost $22.  I am pro for more expensive needles,  they are like butter and well worth the money. The discussion was about the Addi Turbos found you can find them here using my Amazon Affiliate link for Addi Turbo Knitting Needles,

Our discussion inspired me to knit.  I was planning to spend the next few days watching my kids at the pool.  It was the championships and if you ever been to a winter swim meet space is limited but you sit for hours for you kids to swim less than 5 minutes.   I sat a total of 12 hours on the bleachers in 3 days.   So I had time, to kill.  I had one skein of yarn i picked up in Lancaster and the Bird In hand Knitting shop.

I made the hat show above using Size 9 Addi Turbos circular needles, 9 dbl points with Cascade superwash. I followed the size Med directions.   I added extra rows, 2 in body and 3 at the decrease to give the more slouch look.  I also crochet a flower.  Which I am still deciding if I like the flower.  It took me about 3-4 hours total.

Online Shopping Tips

online_shopping_tips

Online Shopping Tips : Every holiday season I watch and and plan looking for the best on line deals.  Then excitement sets in Black Friday Deals, Cyber Monday,  Latest and great lowest prices.  Just last night I got caught up in a purchase for 25% off and a free-ship.   Yea another site had the items at a lower price with free ship.  So off we are to cancel the order.  So I want to share and remind myself of my rules to online shopping.

Online Shopping tips :

  1. Shopping Plan: Have a plan, if it is a paper list, Pintrest Board, or Amazon wishlist : Know what you are looking for.  If you use an Amazon wish list .. it tells you the price you added the item to your wish list, then  what is the current price and if it changes the saving difference.. I was surprised how many of my items went down.
  2. Compare: Spend the time price shopping and comparing prices.. I know it seems like time consuming but think you are not driving to the store.
  3. Order Early: Order Custom items 1st ! Like Frames,Blankets, Shirts, Frame,  If you think you want something customized order early ,  because gives the seller time plus if a mistake is made gives the seller time to correct.
  4. Shopping Email Account: Do create a separate shopping email- so you can sign up for those newsletters and sale emails.  So they dont clog up your inbox but you still can get the deals.
  5. Watch shipping deadlines.  Many sellers will have normal holiday cut off,  then after a certain day rush processing and shipping fees come into place.
  6. Avoid the hype:  My husband wanted a video game,  A  big box retailer offered it in store at $20 off but another on line retailer offer it for the same price. The prices on many items will reduce as the holiday get closer.
  7. Coupons Codes: Stop check for coupons a simple search in your Google search bar for “thestore.com coupons 2013” can save you 10-40% and free ship so worth
  8. No Hassle Rebates: Do sign up for rebate sites like Ebates these sites allow you to earn more back when you are already shopping at these stores.  You sign up for the account, then look up the site and shop.   Also if you are already on the site you can look up the store on ebates click through ebates and your cart will still be loaded.   Ebates and site like Ebates are shopping portholes,  How it works is the Online retailer pays Ebates a percentage,  they take a cut and then also give money back to you in the form of a rebate.   This is on top of any coupon codes you are already using.  It is a win win.   Ebates gives you rebate on most retailers like Amazon, Target, QVC, Macys and more.   Also when you share ebates you can earn more. So I will share my ebates with you, go sign up so worth it,  I earned $20 last night.Ebates Coupons and Cash Back
  9. Security: Avoid sites where they say a Security is not current.  A retailer should always have there security rank current.  If a pop up window comes up and say the site is not secure .. leave.
  10. Avoid: A retailer should never ask you to give them your credit card in an email.  Also if you purchased with a retailer and making a return,  they should never ask for your card for the return.  They can return it through the original transaction. NEVER email your credit card numbers.  Also do trust paypal.  As a retailer for years on my superhero kids cape store,  I can tell you pay pal is secure and will assist you if you have a problem.
  11. Safe Packages: When shipping to your home and you are not home you might want to have a secure place to have the packages be left (behind a stack of wood, or a bench) or have the items shipped to a more secure place neighbor, work, or grandmas.

I love online shopping because it make life easy and my family happy.  Because they are not stuck in lines at a store.  Try some of these tips and your holidays will be much more enjoyable.. because you can shop anytime.    I am off to find that great item for my kids..

Disclosure this post contains affiliate links.. which I earn a small amount that is basically enough to buy coffee at a fast food chain.
