5 Disaster Tips for Pet Owners

5 Disaster Tips for Pet Owners

Anyone who knows me knows I adore my dogs they are family to us.   Both Lloyd my Doberman and Grundy my bulldog are a huge part of our house hold.  They determine many things from weekend get-aways length we stay because they might destroy my home. Whom will be able to stay with my babies when we are gone,  also the fact I only own leather furniture because I like them to join me sitting on the couch.  The thought of a natural disaster displacing part of my family away from us makes me very anxious.  Purina asked me to participate in a goggle talk recently which I was compensated for in exchange for this post .  The purpose of the talk was to learn more about  Disaster Tips for Pet Owners.

The talk was fascinating because as a pet owner I never think about “A Plan” for my pets. Think about it??  What would you do if something major happens? You worry and know what you will do with your children.  What about your furry babies?  Purina helps respond to natural disasters in the United States that seriously disrupt the functioning of communities causing animals harm and distress. In the United States in 2015 Purina donated $31.5 million worth of pet food, pet supplies and monetary contributions to pet-related charities and other community organizations across the country.  For more information please visit purina.com

What did I learn from the Disaster Pet  talk ?

Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina Veterinarian was the leader of the talk answering  all our questions.

1st Basic things,  I would not think about like that wet pet food is better then dry to keep in a pet disaster kit because it is more stable and not subjected going spoiled if the can gets wet.  He also informed us that you should have an extra collar and leash, just in case.   It is imported to  keep an extra set of the animals records in the pet disaster kit and in your important papers.

Do you know what local hotels with in a 2 hour radius would take your animal, how about if local shelters can they help you if your dog was not able to come with.. good questions I never thought about.

I loved the idea that I don’t know if many people with cats think of:  Try leaving your cat carrier out so that your cats get use to going in the Cat carrier on a regularly basis.. My old cat hated the carrier and cried every-time he went it to the vet.  Having a cat use to the carrier daily can cut down on the animals anxiety about being transported.

The Dr also addressed my concern with a bulldog.  Most can’t swim English Bulldogs are top heavy so a life jacket for your dog can also be important if you are in a flood prone or water area.

5 Disaster Tips for Pet Owners

  1. Know the common natural disasters that can occur: Though pet owners should try to be prepared for all types of emergencies if possible, depending on which U.S. region you reside in, there are certain natural disasters that are more common than others. For example, hurricanes and cyclones are more likely to occur if you live near the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Coast, and tornadoes mainly hit areas like Kansas or Iowa in the Midwest. The West coast typically experiences wildfires and flash flooding can take place in certain areas across the U.S. – such as the Southwest – after large storms. If you live in a region where hurricanes are common, it’s important to understand the elevation level of your property and whether it is prone to floods. This will help you understand how your property will be affected when a hurricane hits and can help you prepare a plan in advance for your pets.
  2. Prep your home and pet: The first step to preparing your pet for a natural disaster is to make sure that he or she is wearing a securely fastened collar with up-to-date identification in case you become separated during a natural disaster. Pet owners can consider having their pet microchipped to assure that the pet can be identified and found via an electronic device as well. To prepare your home for natural disasters, talk to your local veterinarian who can provide waterproof, “Pets Inside” stickers that you can place on the front and back door of your house to alert rescuers that there are pets inside your home. In the case of a hurricane, try to cover all of your windows with permanent storm shutters or marine plywood and keep your pet away from them while the hurricane is passing through.
  3. Prepare a disaster kit: Your pet disaster kit should include basic pet essentials such as bottled water, cans of wet food, blankets, collapsible bowls, cat litter and pan, and a leash and collar. A one-to-two-week supply of food that your pet usually eats is an ideal amount to include in your disaster kit, however make sure to replace the food according to the expiration dates. Have photos of your pet on-hand in case you need to distribute pictures if your pet gets lost and make sure to include any important paperwork pertaining to your pet (e.g. vaccine records/medical history, veterinary contact information, medications list and emergency contacts). Finally, be sure to include a basic pet first-aid kit in your disaster kit.
  4. Develop an evacuation plan: Do your research and save precious evacuation time by identifying possible locations where you can take your animals should you have to evacuate. These locations can include animal shelters, veterinary clinics or even pet-friendly hotels where you and your pet can find relief until the disaster passes. Keeping your dog’s medical records on-hand is vital since some pet-friendly emergency relief centers require proof of vaccinations in order for your pet to stay there.
  5. Recruit friends and neighbors: It’s also important to consider creating a buddy system with your neighbor, family or friend who can look out for your pet in case you are not home when a disaster strikes. Add this person to your veterinarian’s emergency contact list of people who have authority to approve necessary emergency treatments if you can’t be reached. Also, identify places where you can leave your pet while you are out of town to avoid leaving your pet alone. Always let your pet sitter and back-up person know where your pet’s disaster kit is stored in case of an emergency.

An Interview with Grundy the Bowling Bulldog

I wanted to share for my Wednesday post,  my Bowling Bulldog Grundy because a stupid pet tricks are no longer on the air with David Letterman.  Grundy will never have his day.  So my interview with my bulldog and a bowling ball is best toy for a bulldog.

Bowling Bulldog

An interview with Grundy The Bowling Bulldog

What were you like prior to taking up Bowling?

Grundy the Bowling Bulldog : “I had a problem I hated toys, I had an need to destroy any toy that came in the house.   I prided myself on distracting Llyods (my adoptive doberman brother) I would take his tennis balls,  shred them before he knew they were gone.   Rope toys with a knot What was the point ? to see who could get to the center .. kind of like a tootsie pop.  I even use to hang on the tire outside the one the “little humans” played on .. I would hang as it spun.   The Terminator of Toys  was my nickname.  ”

“I was  seeing therapist for a while,  she keep on giving me this red thing with a hole.  They shoved peanut butter in named after a giant gorilla.  I just ate the red thing.. it tasted like crap ”

So Grundy how did you discover your love of bowling?

Grundy the Bowling Bulldog:  “The large male human brought a large hard ball in to the house it was black and had some holes.   There was also a skull on it.  It sat near the door so I check it out.  I tried to bite it.   I couldn’t,  I licked it it was cold, so I pushed it .. it rolled.   So I chased it.”

Grundy the Bowling Bulldog

What is your strategy?

Grundy the Bowling Bulldog:  “My main goal is to keep my ball away from my humans and my brother Lloyd.  I am the perfect height to set my chest on it.  I also don’t like when it get stuck in a coner of the house. I try to maintain a speed that I can catch up to it.”

He continued .. “I recently got a new colored ball can’t tell you what color it is because I am color blind- True story.   The new bowling ball has  no holes or no smell of humans smell fingers  the old balls holes smelled of beer, pizza and cigarettes which was very pleasant.   This one since it has no smell I focus on the game more.”

Bowling Bulldog

How does your Family feel about your bowling obsession?

Bowling Bulldog:  “The big female human is always running around with a white rectangle thin in her hands when I am practicing always calling may name and saying look here.   The little humans chase me around when I am bowling it is very annoying.”

What are your hopes:

Grundy the Bowling Bulldog:  “I hope for a steak, more short walks ( I get tired fast the whole short nose thing and the heat), central air in the summer (again the breathing thing) , good belly rubs, no more manicures the nail clipping sucks, I also would like more trips to the stream.. I like the cool in the heat.   Also I would like a larger space to bowl.”

“Also Someday I would like to meet other Bowling Bulldogs and form a League with the little shirts.. dare to dream”

Have a Great summer check out Grundys Videos below.

Dear Bad Dog

dogDear Lloyd the Dog,

FYI…. Destroying my @#% is not the way to my heart.

As I returned home after 44 minutes out at swim team practice

I find my the contents of my purse strewn across the floor..

I see tissues,

Then my tablet (in a case) Thank God,

Then every scrap of paper, note card, and pen..

Lipstick, unused tampons, coins, and earrings…

My beautiful purse.. the one that comes in the “special” storage bag.. the one that I got on a great deal on that cost 4 times as much as I paid for it.. yes you know the  one you chewed on the handles..purse

I can never have nice things because of You, Lloyd

I though You were through “this phase..” You have not made “friends” with the carpet, shoes, stuffed animals or any wood furniture in a year..

chewed carpet

What happened buddy.. where did I,  as an owner go wrong??

Did “the voices” in your doggie head speak to you and tell you to get Angry with my beautiful Massi handbag?

I know,  they say dogs don’t get it.. but I know You do!

You hang your head in Shame..

You hid when I walked in..

there was no happy dog greeting at the door.

No,  “Hi Mom I am glad you are home” or tail wagging in joy

You ran

and

You hid.

Did you even think??

They say dogs have the understand of a 2 year old child ..

So understand this Lloyd!

NOOOOOO  and Bad Dog!!!!!!

(I know no such thing as a bad dog.. You just do bad things and make  poor choices)

Signed,

Your Owner who wants nothing to do with you for the next 30 minutes.

Cheap Solution for a Muddy Backyard

muddy backyardCheap Solution for a Muddy Backyard:  My dogs track in mud from  my backyard every spring.  During the winter the dogs barely step off the patio in the cold to do their business.  So my grass well is no more by the end of the winter.  So once the thaw happens, my back yard turns into a muddy mess. My daughters birthday is in March and it is usually the 1st really nice day.  Which means I have 15 kids running in and out of my home in the mud.   So several years ago we decided we needed a solution for our muddy backyard.muddy backyard

Cheap Solution for a Muddy Backyard:

Straw/ Hay

We purchase Straw or hay depending on the garden centers recommendation.

  • Straw has seeds so wit will make weeds in your lawn-  For us we have not been able to get grass (because of the dog urine) to grow in that area beside the weeds in the straw.. so it is ok for us.  Straw is the cheaper solution about $13 bale
  • Salt Hay does not have seeds  so it will not make weeks in your yard.  Salt hay cost about $17 a bale

What I love about this Cheap Solution for a Muddy Backyard is the straw/hay actually will decompose as the spring and summer come so by early summer it the mud and hay are all gone.

1 Bale of straw / hay did a large area  I used the entire bale

No more muddy shoes or paw prints in your home .. your welcome. muddy backyard

14 tips for take great Holiday Photos &Giveaway

kids with dogs taking a pictureSo every year around this time I start think the Holidays are around the corner.  I start taking pictures in hopes that one might be perfect for theholiday card of the year.  The one that sent to all friends and family.

People might know that I love taking pictures, if you read my blog you will see that most of the photos are mine.

Tips for getting great Photos to use on your Holiday cards:

  1. Clean lens of the camera with a proper lens cloth
  2. Take the shots on your largest and highest resolution  it will give you a lot to work with later allowing you to crop and edit.
  3. Make sure kids are well rested
  4. Time of day to take Pictures are better taken not in high sun or bright sun, try late afternoon, or early morning, and overcast days.  This will help you avoid over exposure and white burn spots.
  5. Get outside and take them natural light is best, and will avoid using the flash.. see #3
  6. Location  choose a place where the kids are happy and not too distracted, walk in the woods, a deserted playground.
  7. Avoid clutters background,  use nature as a back drop, but make sure there is not a garbage behind you.
  8. Wear colors, but you don’t have to be matchy matchy.. one accent color on every one can tie a picture together.
  9. Step close when taking a shot. (when you take a picture take 2 steps closer,  the shot will be better)  No one cares what shoes your family had on they want to see your smiling face,  unless you are just taking a just shoe shot to show how big your kids feet are.
  10. Take a lot of photos a better chance of getting the shot or you can use multiple shots on your holiday cards.
  11. Take from different angles,  your knees bend so get down on there level, or get on a chair
  12. If you are worried about a dbl chin.. always take the picture with you looking up to the camera, from above)
  13. Include yourself and spouse you are part of the picture
  14. If you want a family shot .. no one around ,  it is ok to ask a stranger (if they have a big camera around there neck even better,  and ask them to step in for the shot  (tell them you want a close shot)
  15. Also you can make all you photos look similar using an effect to join them all like this.. I used a cross process effect on picmonkey.  various pictures of kids

Neutered Dogs: Cut Them Balls Off

I don’t know what it is but I can wait to get my dogs balls cut off (neutered).  I have never had a animal that has not been neutered.  My new Doberman puppy Lloyd is not neutered yet and the 1st thing I asked the vet was when could be.  He said somewhere between 4-5months some vets say any time after 8 weeks to do the neuter deed.   So about a month ago I noticed that the puppy’s little boys were dropping. I became aware (my husband’s says obsessed) with get them cut off.  He says I mention the neuter all the time.  I just think my husband is being super sensitive,  you know him being male and all..

It just every time I see Lloyd and he rolls on his back. I see those  2 little nuts staring me in the face. It is only a matter of time before they are swinging in the wind  Ewe.. time to neuter him.

Also Lloyd has been mounting Grundy our bulldog  I know it is dominance but still, MANNERS.

doberman puppy

I am hyper aware of what un-neutered dogs do like… RUNAWAY.  Hershey my last male Doberman was fixed, right before we adopted him after a year of age.    Needless to say the male hormones got to his brain,  he was always looking for a Bitch(female dog) to score.   Hershey was a runner, hit buy a car and survived type of runner.(cost us $$$$)  Needless to say Lloyd took off out the front door Christmas day right in front of a car .. CUT THEM BALLS OFF. Neuter your dog.

Medical Opinion:  The vet experts say the earlier you get your god neutered the better.  I have no intention of breeding this dog, so theys need to go.

Guess who is 4 months !  Tomorrow is the day!  Lloyd loses his boys.. I say goodbye good riddance. Neutering is my only option.

I guess my husband may have a point,  I might be a little obsessed.
