Sesame Place Great for older Kids- Review and Giveaway

kids at sesame placeSesame Place Is not just a place for little kids.  This year we attended opening day at Sesame place. I attended with my son(age 11) , my sons close friend (age12) , my daughter (age 7), and UpperCase women’s Daughter (age 5).  We love Sesame Place. Even as my children get older,  it is always a fun day for all.  We normally bring a big kid for my son to enjoy the day with, so he can ride the rides.  Every time  the friend,  is not sure because Sesame evokes a feeling from there early childhood.  But once they arrive and see how amazing Sesame Place is for all ages they relax and have a wonderful time.

Sesame Place Review

This trip, My sons friend never has ridden  a roller coaster,  the Vapor Trail was just the right size for a 1st time coaster.  My daughter choose to ride with him.. here is the before and after shot.   He loved it and could not wait to ride again.kids ready yo ride a roller coaster

Sesame Place has just as many dry rides as they do wet. So anytime of year is a great time to go.  My  kids also love climbing Nets and Climbs is always a fun place for the kids to climb and get lost in a safe way 30ft off the ground.  It is a wonderful workout.kids in a climbing net

Another big hit was the Elmos World – Free fall ride check out the faces.kids on a free fall ride

There are also some amazing shows and performances this year.  We did not attend because the age of my kids are all about the rides but they did spend a few moments posing with the various Sesame Street props.

We arrived at 10 and spent about 6 hours it was a fun action packed day.

My summer tip if you are close by is to go later in the day arrive around 3- 3:30 you save money on a twilight pass and the park is less crowded. We will stay till the park closes and the kids just go around and around on the rides because the lines are shorter.

Fitness Friday

The last few weeks I have not done a Fitness Friday post.  The reason I was on vacation.  So the accountability I normally get from the blog was not there.  I was down the shore with my In-laws.  They are major sweet eaters. There was actually $180 worth of candy purchased for the trip.

It was tough. They also had 5 dozen cookies.. yea the kind that you buy when you go to the fancy coffee shops that are about $3 each. It was so over the top in the sweet department.   See me having a tough time with all that …you bet ya.. We were talking major will power.

My MIL told me that my son asked every time he wanted something. I was happy because he was somewhat conscious of what he was eating.  I guess my family is buying my program.

So how did I do?  I only ate one cookie all week, and once the M&M were gone I was fine.  It was the Ice Cream 5 times over the course of the week.  I also found out I really love lobster bisque. I did choose salad as an option for dinner and stop myself at one slice of pizza.  So it was not as bad as it could have been.

I really should have read my Friends Trinas advice at OboyOrganics Healthy Vacation Snacks Post .  It might have helped this week.

I walk a fair amount not my normally 10K steps.. well I might off I was changing for bathing suit to clothes and I forgot to put my Fit Bit on.

I maintained my weight at 266.

This week I vow to walk more eat less.  I have been walking the kids to swim team in the morning and heading to the pool more, the end of the week camping (with a lot of hills)

Howe have you been doing since the summer heat is here?

Adoption, Eat a Wendys frosty for a Good Cause!

Adopting is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I have many wonderful friends and family who are adopted.  I consider the people who adopt and give children to be true angels.   My own life would not be the same if these angels have not touched the people I love.   There is no more self -less act then knowing you are unable to provide the best environment for your child and then allowing another to care for them.   Then the other angels (the adoptive family) taking on a child and caring as if they are are blood; came from there womb.  There is no greater gift to a child than accepting them in to your home and changing the course of there lives.

These people of and around adopting children  are Angels in my life and always will be!

So when Wendy’s asked me to spread the word about the    Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA, ) on Father’s Day weekend (June 16 & 17) promotion to benefit the cause I was all in …   50-cents from each Frosty purchase will be donated to DTFA.   It is this weekend tomorrow and Sunday Fathers Day!

These donations will be used to benefit the cause of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, which is a program that helps foster children in need find great homes.

So how can you help?

There are so many ways to donate! Check them out and be sure to pass them on!

This signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is dedicated to finding permanent adoptive families for children in foster care. (includes the original, parfaits, shakes and floats)

2. Use a mobile-friendly website to check in at Wendy’s: Wendy’s will donate 50-cents for every customer that checks in at Wendy’s restaurants during Father’s Day Weekend (June 16 and 17 only) using Wendy’s special mobile-friendly website found at www.wendys.com/treatitforward.

Cardio Training: Not Just For Weight Loss : Guest Post

Almost everyone knows that performing cardio training a few times per week can result in weight loss, but not everyone knows of the many additional benefits to be gained from this type of exercise. Cardio training not only helps people shed excess pounds, it also helps tone muscle, reduce stress, and offer relief from a variety of health ailments. Here are all of the benefits!

Weight Loss
It is no secret that a good cardio workout will help you shed those pounds, or for those who are already at a healthy weight, it can help with maintenance. Cardiovascular exercise helps to increase the metabolism, which can become sluggish due to bad diet, health issues and age. Excess calories are burned, which when coupled with good nutrition, helps reduce weight the safe and healthy way. There are a number of fad diets out there, and typically they make the claim of fast weight loss without exercise. These diets may initially help shed pounds quickly, but victims of this type of diet usually regain all of the weight, and some even add on a few more pounds. When it comes to weight loss, it is best to stick with a healthy diet and cardio training.

Dangers of Inactivity
Billions are spent on healthcare due to inactivity. In fact, a sedentary lifestyle may lead to a number of health issues, regardless of weight or age. Hypertension and heart disease are often a result of a sedentary lifestyle. Cardio training 3-4 times a week for thirty minutes or more reduces the risk for obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease, and it doesn’t take dropping large amounts of weight to notice a difference in your health. Just going for a daily walk continuously or spending 20 minutes a day at the gym can do wonders.

Stronger Muscles
Like weight lifting, cardio strengthens muscles. It affords the body a tone and lean appearance. The heart is also a muscle and benefits immensely from this type of exercise. A cardiovascular workout increases blood flow, which in turn improves organ function. Furthermore, if you’re a weightlifter, pumping iron only does so much for your physique. To make sure you can actually see all that muscle you’ve built, get some cardio in to burn the fat that’s hiding it!

Stress Reduction
Cardio training has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety. When we exercise, our bodies release some “feel good hormones” known as endorphins, that make most people feel a bit better about things for a short period of time. In addition to this, cardio can be a great way to work out stress from work, home or elsewhere!

Confidence Booster
Exercise also increases energy and confidence. A surge in these two items may mean clearer thinking, better job performance and even an increased sex drive. Let’s face it, when you look good, you feel good, and there is no better confidence booster than looking and feeling sexy. Feeling good will then make you more likely to work out again, repeating the cycle!

There are many benefits to cardio training. Often, it is ignored in place of core strengthening via weight training, but it should be a normal part of everyone’s daily routine. It helps to shed extra pounds, reduce health related ailments, and tone muscles. Never be afraid to start slow. Always work your way into a new cardio routine – don’t push anything. Let the results come naturally!

Mamavation Monday- Changing a Family

This past week has been interesting. I have been eating way better and have increased my running. But I also gained some help not only from the mamavation team….  My son age 11 has committed himself to me.  He is a competitive swimmer,  something that I have always encouraged because with health issues that run in our family diabetes  and  psoriatic arthritis .One of my biggest gifts to give him is a love of Physical activity of a life long sport like swimming.  Right now,  he is taking a beak from his beloved sport for spring after 3 year straight of swimming (he normally swims over 100 laps a night).  Telling me “Mom I want to swim this summer and back in the fall because I want the 5 year plaque.” (swimming will continue)

My son is a great trainer pushing me and  he wants to walk/run with me.  It is a challenge for him also even though he does dry land with swimming, they run around the track once.  So my son is jogging with me around the block.. which this week is the big block 2 + miles.  We do a run walk combo.  He also told me he wants to do the 5K with me in June.

But the biggest surprise came last night.  My husband was joking with my son and asked him if he wanted to walk home. He said yes,  I joined him we walked 3 + miles home from the restaurant.  We left while my daughter was in the restroom.  Once I returned home my husband told me  our daughter age 7 was very upset.  Basically she threw down at the restaurant because she wanted to walk with us.

I said to my husbands “She would have never made it,  She was exhausted”  he agreed..but she was not having any of that..

She cried  “I wanted to go”

She has been asking since I started. running, But I thought it was too far for her little legs.

She then told me “Mommy I have been training at school.  I walk every second recess around the big circle (large playground) .. since you started running in the winter.”

Crush my heart she has been running since January.. she never told me.  She just kept saying she could do it.  I walk/run in the morning while they are at school normally, so I never gave it a thought.  She wants to do what I do and be with me. Bless her heart and I will be a better Mom.

The little voices in my life needed to be heard.. and my new good habits are rubbing off.

I am getting a great sense of clarity on what is import. I am loving the quality time with my son (soon with my daughter) I am getting on these walks.  They are eating better already!!

Physical activity:

  • Monday 16th- walked and did Mamavation hazing
  • Tuesday 17th -walked/ran 1.5 miles with club and did the hazing
  • Wednesday 18th- walked/ran 2 miles did hazing
  • Thursday 19th- walked/ran 2 miles did both hazings
  • Friday 20th walked/ran 2 miles did both hazings
  • Saturday 21st walked/ran with club 1.75 miles, walked 2 miles at zoo, walked 3 miles  home from restaurant did hazing and took two ibuprofen, fell asleep with my daughter.

Food:

I got better with my food middle to the end of the week. I am taking the process seriously. It is very grueling to be the next Mamavation Mom.   Wish me luck I hope I am chosen to be a finalist announced tomorrow night.

weight  269-267

Feeling- Great more energy and know everything is fitting better

I am a Finalist… Please vote for me BABYPOP!!

Update: 4/30- I did not win Mamavation Mom  but I will still continue the battle for a healthy life.

A Simple Childhood Test that Saves Lives- Guest Blogger

SimonFund?  Sudden cardiac arrest?  A simple Test that can save my kids life.. A friend told me about Darren, Phyllis, and their son Simon Sudman. I was moved by the Sudmans lives.  She asked if I would mind writing a blog post about the importance of Simon’s story.  I said of course, Then I asked her for one better,  if they could tell Simon’s story to me as a parent… So I can share it with you as a parent.  I would like to welcome my guest bloggers Darren & Phyllis Sudman two amazing parents saving others children.

Guest Blogger: Darren & Phyllis Sudman

At the time, Britax was the best car seat; Combi, the best lightweight stroller; Dr. Brown’s, the best bottles.  By best, I also mean safest.  However, none of that mattered because Simon only got to use them for 96 days.

Our son, Simon Brach Sudman was born on October 21, 2004 with near perfect Apgar scores.   He sailed through his well baby checks. He smiled for the first time in December.  He died on January 24, 2004 at three months of age.  He was napping and didn’t wake up.  All the books told us what he should be doing in utero.  They told us about car safety and gas bubbles.  They never mentioned sudden cardiac arrest.  We were prepared to protect our child . . . so we thought.

Sudden cardiac arrest takes the lives of thousands of children every year.   It can be a sleeping baby (15% of all unexplained sudden infant deaths).  It can be a recreational swimmer (unexplained drowning).  It can be a competitive athlete.  It can be a good driver (unexplained car crash).  We learned all of this after Simon died.  We want you to learn about it now, because the most important two things we learned were: sudden cardiac arrest in children is not rare; and it can be prevented close to 90% of the time with a simple, non-invasive test, an ECG/EKG. We screen our kids’ eyes and ears, but we neglect to screen their most vital organ.

We created Simon’s Fund to raise awareness about the conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in kids.  In seven years, we have conducted free screenings for over a dozen schools and checked almost 4,000 hearts.  We have helped 36 kids discover an undetected, potentially fatal heart condition.  You can learn about some of them at www.simonsfund.org. Based on our screenings and the screenings of similar organizations, one out of every 100 kids has an undetected heart condition. That’s our 1%. Please get your kids screened and pass the word along.

Want to read more about the test Please visit www.simonsfund.org.

Also I want to link up to Jessica Found the Marbles her boys recently had the test done by SimonsFund.

Dr Meg Meeker, Vicks and the Flu

So I got to go to a lunch with Vicks and author / Dr. Meg Meeker.  It was a great learning experience, I wish she was my kids pediatrician .  Currently for the last 4 years my kids have not gotten sick but they will it is only a matter of time.  My kids were very sick little kids.  My son a daycare kid until the age of 4 was sick all the time.  Like many working parents thee is a level which a sick kid  will head to day care.. runny nose acceptable.. fever not acceptable.  Cough at night acceptable.  It is  struggle and choice every working parent fights with.

With my daughter I was home.  So was she for weeks and weeks did she miss day care when she  got the flu.   Then the Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea among infants and young children.  I was so tired during that rota period running a business and dealing with a nonstop laundry sheet and diaper change.

So during the lunch with Dr. Meg Meeker I learned a few things:

  • Know your kids normal temp.. track it see what it is in the morning, after noon and night
  • Having a certain level of humidity (moisture) in your house helps to avoid the flu
  • if you suspect the flu if you head to your Doctor with in the first 24 hours they can give you/kids a shot to shorten the length of the flu
  • Try a children’s Tylenol  or children’s Advil on your child to reduce fever, some fever need to run there course to help fight the infection.
  • Call your doctor for high fever over 101
  • Follow your gut Mother intuition is one of the best line of defense when dealing with a child’s illness.

Some products I learned about from vicks to make Flu Season  easier.

Try a humidifier like Vicks Germ Free Humidifier to avoid dry air in your home. The V790N Vicks® Warm Mist GermFree Humidifier kills 99.999% of germs, bacteria, and mold in the water before its warm mist ever touches the air.

The V980 Vicks® Behind Ear Gentle Touch Thermometer with Fever InSight™ Feature is gentle enough for a sleeping baby and is clinically proven accurate at detecting fever with instant one-second readings.

The Vicks  humidity monitor is awesome.  I knew the humidity in my house was too dry and the vicks monitor let me know how bad it was.  I added the Humidifier and correct the issue.  I feel so much better i know what I can control and avoid the flu.

To learn more check out behindear.com

Also Vicks will donate For each share of our “What will you share this cold and flu season?” video, Vicks will donate a Behind Ear Thermometer to Baby Buggy, a non-profit dedicated to providing U.S. families in need with essential items for their children. Here is a link to the video on our Facebook page

Disclosure: I did receive products from Vicks, Dr. Megs Book and Lunch at Plate. My opinions and writing in this post are all of my own.

Palette Kids Art Class for Kids

This past weekend my children got to experience Palette Kids art class in Philadelphia it is a art studio for kids. The art classes are given by Perry Milou a Philadelphia artist.  The art class was lovely.  Perry taught the kids about figures, and how to draw them.  He had several assistants to assist the kids.  Then he allowed the children to pick a project to make and create.  I have to say I love the vibe of the studio.  It was a real art studio with art  that fosters creativity,  not some pristine art space that is uninspired.  The inspiration of the space allowed and beckons the children to imagine and create. Some kids did 3 d art, painting, clay, and jewelry.

When school are cutting art budgets. Children are no longer allowed to use really clay in our schools any more.  The are using a commercial crayon company clay like product,  which I find extremely disappointing in the public school system.  At Palette Kids,  Perry’s allows the kids to use really clay and create. Check out my sons project.

Palette kid offers classes and this summer Art Classes   special Come to your 1st class and bring a friend for free.  $40 for a 2 hour class  with one of the most amazing pop arts teachers Perry Milou of Philadelphia. His classes are an amazing gift for any child.  The idea age is 5 to teens.  They also offer Philadelphia birthday parties for your budding artist.

I can highly recommend Palette Kids  both my children hope to return and learn from Perry Milou again.
