How to teach responsibility : That can grow with your child

Pley Disclosure

How to teach responsibility ?:  I have been thinking alot about one of the prompts I was given to write about for my last Pley post “How do you teach young kids about responsibility?”  My oldest is 15 yep,  just turned it last month.  I have to say everyday, I am more and more in love with who my son has become.  Not only has he become responsible but a truly caring person.  He looks at the world through empathetic eyes and views the world as his “responsibility.”

I know, a 15 year old who really cares about others, he does, which still takes me as by surprise even though he has always been this way.  This weekend he helped a 12 year boy swim across a pool kicking for the 1st time after 4 years swimming practice.  Rooting  his “little buddy” on to win gold, it made my heart swell to watch them both grow.  He has taken responsibility for his buddy success. I love when  find out that he has stopping to see a neighbor on his way home from school without being asked to check that he is “all right”. He want to make sure his older friend is safe and healthy.

Today i was asked,   How did your Son come to understand responsibility for enhancing others lives?  I said I always stressed the importance of caring and understanding for others.

Some people have more,  and some have less,  some just are plan happy with the gifts they are given.

It started when he was little I would have him run soup to older neighbors, or have them work with me to give donation to a toy bank.   I remember my little boy wanting to give all his saved money when a collection was not taken.  He said  he wanted to give because it was his responsibility to give to other kids that had less.  He is still your typical teen never picking up his mess, regardless he is always amazing in my eyes.

Allowing kids to find balance and learn the world is a much bigger place then their block or street. Teaching there are others that are in your own world that can benefit from kindness.  Children will learn it always comes back to you 2 fold.  Just the basics be good and kind then responsibility will come.

How do you teach Responsibility?

This Post was sponsored by Pley-  Pley is a monthly toy subscription based service that allows you to pick out the toy of your choosing.  The toy of your choice gets shipped to you. When the child is finished you simply put the toy back in the packaging and ship it back postage paid.   You are taking responsibility to not add to landfills and teach your child responsibility for a toy.  It is a “Win Win” on the responsibility front.   It is a rental toy dream because your kids get to play with all those expensive toys sets without the cost.   That is also being responsible with your money.   Check out Pley here.

16 Ways To Teach Kids to be Grateful

Pley Disclosure

kids playing with toys from Pley

16 Ways To Teach Kids to be Grateful:  With 2 kids and a limited budget.  I feel teaching expectation and gratitude  has always been very important learning toys are not a requirements when we go to the store or anywhere.  When my son was younger, I remember being in a large store (the one with a bullseye logo).  We were shopping for clothes and toiletries.  My son who was about 4 at the time started throwing a temper tantrum about getting a toy car.   I was not sure what to do,  I remembered  a discussion with a mom who told me once she just left a store,  leaving the cart in the isle to teach her child not to ask for toys.

On this day.. I decided enough was a enough,  we were in the card isle, this little boy would not let up.  I grabbed my daughter and walked away saying “We are leaving (full cart abandoned… sorry to who every cleaned it up) … he was so shocked he stopped crying.  I think he thought we would go back,  and we did not.  We drove towards home and I did not say a word.  When we pulled in the driveway,  I turned around and informed him that going to store does not mean he will get a toy.  That was the day I decided, I will not have a kid that expected toys for everything and would be grateful when he did receive .

16 Ways To Teach Kids to be Grateful

How do you teach kids how to not beg for every single toy they see and to be grateful for what they have.

  1. Toys are not a reward for everyday task.. For larger tasks/goals like working all summer to jump off diving board, great grades.
  2. Create a list of toys and evaluate it and explain that one or 2 items not all items may be purchased.
  3. It is ok to wait for a holiday gifts Christmas, Hanukkah , and Birthdays
  4. Teach your kids one or 2 gifts are ok to get,  it is not a contest.
  5. Teach your child to appreciate toys and gifts,  say “Thank you”and take your time
  6. On holidays open each person gift one at a time, they gift giver took the time to locate and purchase the gift, not to mention spent money- gifts are not a given they should be appreciated.
  7. Every Holiday or everyday  is not a toy holiday or gift holiday (Easter, 4th of July, going to grandmas house) are not reasons for gifts, toys, money or  Xbox games.
  8. Set limits on value of toys (my son once wanted a $200 Lego set, that was not in our budget,  he saved for it)
  9. It is OK not to have what there friends have.
  10. Life is not always about being equal or fair –  Sometimes one person will get something and you will have to remind them of past gifts or toys they received (jealousy is not good, teach of the good they have)
  11. Lower Expectations avoiding instant gratification complex
  12. Lead by example:  Do not always buy something for yourself,  1st time you see it, teach them window shopping and planning for goals.  (chart or saving for item)
  13. It is ok not to have the latest or greatest, and used is fine.  Try a thrift store.
  14. It is good to want it makes things special when you do receive them.
  15. Souvenirs and Toy are not required when we go someplace the experience is enough. This is particular important when you child goes somewhere with other people.  For us this is a big one. Being a blogger I get invited to many places.  I love sharing some of these experience with others.  I do however inform a parent and child that we will not be purchasing souvenir when we go.  The experience is enough, and planing for a decorative souvenir cup for $12 each kid (a whopping $36 on plastic crap that will be throw away in a few weeks) will not happen.  If the kid bring money for his souvenir then it makes my kids feel left out.  Plus the kid who is focused on the souvenir and shopping is missing the actually experience.   My kids are invited many places because they are grateful, always say thank you and don’t ask for stuff. (this is drilled in there heads)  Trust me if you are teaching your kids they need to purchase or get something everywhere they go you are doing a disservice to them.  Because I have heard the other parents and kids mention it,  I know certain kids don’t get invited for this reason.
  16. Teach your kids to verbalize what they liked about a day, experience, or being with family asks specific question on a ride home or at the table.  Have them focus on playing with friends, or great food, what they liked about the stories of the days will help the to build resilience and find fulfillment.

Setting your kids up to live with less stuff allows your kids to experience more with there minds.   The truth is you will not always be there supplying them with funds, teaching them the value of money and Life is not about acquiring stuff is a skill that will always benefit them to seek true happiness.

This Post is sponsored by Pley.  Pley is a subscription based toy service.  You pay a monthly fee starting as low as $9.99,  the kids pick out the toys they are interested in.  Then one of the toys is sent for the child to play with till they choose not too.  You return the toy in the prepaid package and another is sent.    They have amazing toys Legos, American Girl and more.  I love this service because it teaches kids that time and patience and not in instant gratification.  Pley is also a great service because they toys are cleaned and reused by another child.   It teaches also that wanting is good and be grateful when the toys  arrives.   Rental toys create less clutter, less stuff, and time for more experiences.

Dark Rising Monica McGurk Book Review

Dark Rising Monica McGurk Book Review of the second book in the of the Archangel Prophecies series Book giveaway and amazon giveaway

Dark Rising Monica McGurk Book Review : A few years ago I did a book review of Dark Hope, which was the 1st installment of the Archangels Prophecies. Recently, the author Monica McGurk asked me if I would like to do a sponsored review of the next book in the series: Dark Rising. I jumped at the chance, because I could not wait to hear what how Hope Carmichael the main character’s life had progressed after her last journey, after finding out she was key to human salvation.
The 1st book covered Hopes new life and new friendship with dark stranger Michael. It explores Hope’s mark that she received on the back of her neck as a child and what does it mean? The 1st book also tells the story of Hopes quest to protect those girls thrown in to human trafficking, which takes Hope and Michael to Las Vegas to save girls caught in a ring of trafficking despair. The 1st book is setting up the story of Hope’s destine how it effects mankind. Check out my full review here

Dark Rising Monica McGurk Book Review

The 2nd book the story is just as wonderful detailed Hopes tale. Hope’s adventure with the Archangel Michael, her protector/ destroyer continues as they travel over Europe. McGurk continues the story with Hope traveling with the 3 archangels in their human form to Turkey looking for artifacts to aid them on their quest to open the gate. They set up in an abandon house, the tension between the Michael and Hope continues. Hope is determined to help and recover from her past injuries. She takes chances which make the angels uneasy and Michael angry. Slowly they recover clues what take them to France, then to Ireland always leery that the fallen angels are lurking ready to claim Hope for their own.
The book also covers how Hope’s Family is coping at home while searching for clues of Hopes whereabouts. Her parents learn What her neck mark means. He parents grapple with the possibility that Hope was meant for something large then herself but true greatness. The reader understands her parents longing to see their teenage daughter again, if she is alive. I love the duality of showing the other side of the heroine’s world what is fallout at home. Many young adult books avoid the plight of the parents. I love that the parents are not an after thought in McGurks writing helping to develop the plot.
As the story builds it develops into a searching and torment for the main characters. My they find out who is the savior and who is he saving. The finally chapters are riveting the love and anguish that Michael and Hope are felt by the reader. Monica McGurk twist and winds the reader up with the details of the location and stories of the Prophecy . It was a great read.

Dark Rising Monica McGurk Book Review

I have always loved this genera of Young Fiction, supernatural and dark love. This is the second book in the series, but unlike most 2nd books in a trilogy it is not a filler/middle book lacking or leaving too many questions open. McGurk answers questions and gives you closure on areas of the plot. This book also leaves you wanting more of the characters and anticipating the next book. It is pleasing that McGurk treats the reader as smart and does not think that love is simple and doe eyed. Love it is messy and complicated, sometimes bigger then oneself. If you are a lover of books that capture forbidden love, then the Archangels Prophecies series is for you. Check it out here:

Glo Wubble and WubbleX Review Inspired my Teen be a Kid

sponsored postwubble_1_013_0011-5

Glo Wubble Review We receive the Wubble X and the Glo Wubble for a sponsored review the opinions in this post are my own. Prior to receiving the Wubble balls, I have tried one out at the KidzVuz Holiday event.  My daughter really likes playing with it so I could not wait  for us to try it out at home.

Wubble X Review

wubble_1_013_0011

The 1st one we tried was the helium Wubble X.   The Wubble is the size of a kick ball.  It was easy to fill as you can see from the video.   The helium was fun it float up quickly when we used the entire can.  My daughter age 10 loved it  my son age 14 kept fetching it off the ceiling for her.  I would recommend add the patch after to fill it right away.  The Helium does leak out but it was a fun ball to play with.  You can buy refills of air for the Wubble X.  We had a lot of discussion about helium leaving the atmosphere and helium related topics.  Who new a wobble could inspire such a long discussion on science because of a toy?

Here is the video:

Glow Wubble Review

wubble_1_013_0011-8

The Glow Wubble which is a 3 foot Glow in the Dark Ball was the kids favorite because of the size.  My 14 6’1″ son would not stop playing with it. The large a kid is  they are the more they play.  The Glow Wubble was easily to fill in a few minutes with the battery pump that was included in the box with the Glo Wubble (the 4 d batteries were not included).  It is very durable in my experience.   While at the KidzVuzs event in NY I saw a boy laying on it for about 10 minutes and it did not pop.   It was not over inflated either while he was laying on it.  I don’t recommend sharp object near it.

I also like the fact when Glo Wubble looses air you can reflate it with the Pump they provided.    It does pick up dog hair but when it deflates you can wash it off.   Does it Glow? Yes it does glow Blue you have to let it charge like any glow in the dark product.

Ok the picture below was taken 10:30 at night after my teen would not go to bed because he kept playing with the GloWubble.  He would checking to see if it was glowing and saying he was watching it for his sister.   I got about 3 good night hugs from him – while  he was avoiding sleep just to play with the GloWubble.  If you have a bunch of teens in the house you might want to get a few and see what happens. They could have a wubble fight instead of a pillow fight.

wubble_1_013_0011-9

I think both Wubble would make a great gift for a child this holiday season.  I was more than happy to review them. I can wait to share them with our nieces and nephews.

**I received a free product to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations.

My Thanksgiving Hero Nurse Deb #sponsored

Disclosure : This a Sponsored Post by Single Edition Media on behalf of La Brea Bakery

A few weeks ago I wrote about LaBrea campaign for ThanksgivingHeros. I wanted to share about my Thanksgiving Hero with you Nurse Deb. 10 years ago, when I was in the hospital for over a month I met Nurse Deb .  I was put in the hospital aka “pregnancy jail” after my doctors determined that I was unable to control my blood pressure on my own = hospital bed rest.  I was taken for a weekend,  which turned into a 35 days prior to giving birth to my daughter.

This time was hard since we were 2+ hour drive from our closest family.  I had very few visitors in the hospital besides my husband and 4 year old son who came a few times a week after work.  Needless to say I am social person and there is only so much Judging Amy reruns you can watch on a 13 channel hospital TV system.  It was a very lonely time looking at those 4 beige walls.

In enters Nurse Deb,  yes I remember her name (because it is the same as my sisters) and she was the most joy filled person I met during my stay. Nurse Deb has a very happy chill vibe –  a cross between Phoebe from Friends and Joy from Disney’s “insideout”.  This personality is not the norm if you spent any long-term stay in a hospital adult floor,  all the “perky” people work on the pediatric floor.   Since, I was alone Deb would spend time talking asking about what I was knitting, about my son, or  just life stuff, she took a real interest.  It was the human connection I was so much in need of I remember being grateful for her visits.  She made the poking at prodding more palatable.

thanksgiving_hero_3955a

I basically sat around as a human incubator for months, every time Deb came to check on me she was patient and not rushed.    After my daughter was born, I bumped into Deb in the hospital halls.  My daughter was in the NICU for 2 months, Deb again taking an interest asking a ton of questions.  I remember Deb saying was very happy to see me alive after the difficult delivery.  After just giving birth to a 2.8lb baby and feeling like a failure for not making term-mom guilt.  She was the 1st person who made me realize what a gift it was to be alive and everything was going to be OK.

Flash forward 8 years.  I am sitting in my moms group meeting and this bubbly mom of 4, nurse walks in.  Her husband Rick, is a police officer. The more I talk to her I realize this smiling engaging women is my warden and savior from the pregnancy jail. Over the last few years, I have grown to know her family Deb’s husband and 4 active boys. They don’t always have an easy road with both of them being in public service but they are very happy.  Deb works extra during the year and doubles up so she can be with the boys. During the summer Deb and her family spend time exploring the US and bonding. Compassion, Hope, and Love is at the core of Deb’s Family.

thanksgiving hero

When I asked Debbie about her holidays,  she told me it has been years since her family has spend a Thanksgiving together.  This year she working the day shift on Thanksgiving. I would love for Deb and Rick to have a special memory thanking them for their service.  In my experience, Deb did not have to provide a warm smile and sit with me in the hospital but she did because she is true hero.

Thanksgiving Hero with La Brea Bread :  This time of the year we are all looking forward to the holidays.  Thanksgiving is a spectacular meal that hours of planning and preparation go into.  In my family it is my fathers meal to cook he takes such pride in ensuring the entire family is fed.  Where turkey is not my favorite protein, don’t tell my Dad.   I love all the sides his savory stuffing is the best with sausage bits,  My father is the king of gravy I seriously could just eat or drink it all day.  Just give me a loaf of bread to go with the gravy and I am happy girl on Thanksgiving.   The joy of food and family spending time with my cousins and their kids is a day I look forward to all year.

During this special Thursday,  I spend time talking to my husband’s aunts and they share their stories of how many holidays they have worked as nurses.    I have always been very thankful for my job being flexible and I am off on holidays.  It saddens me to think of the people who serve others like Nurses, fire fighters, police and food service workers, don’t always get to be with there families on the special family holidays.  Mainly because, they are caring or even feeding others families.  They are all really special people to care for others.

La Brea Bakery is running a Thanksgiving promotion where you will be able  nominate your “Thanksgiving Hero” – people you know and love who regularly work on Thanksgiving serving others (such as firefighters, police, waiters, etc.). Finding Time for Happiness:  Everyday I am crazy busy (notice the name of my blog? )  and don’t have enough hours to accomplish all that I would like to do.   I would love a minute to read those stack of books I have sitting in the coner of my bedroom, or finish the quilt I have based up.  I am not alone in the this feeling.  The Long summer days are a natural time for Americans to re-focus their time to do more of what they enjoy, but it can still be challenging to make any extra time. In fact, according to a new survey by Safeco Insurance, more than four in five respondents agree they need an extra hour in the day with 70 percent admitting they would use that extra time to do something for themselves.

New Study Shows Every Hour Counts for Time-Crunched Americans’ Quest for Happiness

Safeco Insurance® Launches #MY60 to Encourage Finding an Hour a Day to Do More
The survey results showed that people are working longer hours, but 45 percent are realizing less happiness in their extended workdays. Nearly half say that finding just sixty minutes more in their day to do something they enjoy would make them happy and relaxed. Topping the list of activities for a “do more hour” were personal hobbies (40%), having alone or personal time (29%) and trying something new (22%).

With over half of respondents admitting to feeling more inspired to find free time during summer, Safeco is launching the #MY60 campaign to encourage people to take back 60 minutes of their day over a 60-day period. Safeco is inviting consumers to visit www.safeco.com/MY60 to find tips and checklists on how to create and maximize a “do more hour” for themselves. The site will also feature expert advice from Jonathan Alpert, a Manhattan-based psychotherapist and author of the book “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days.”

“Part of Safeco’s mission is to help both our customers and independent agents get more out of life from getting more involved in their communities to tackling a new challenge,” said Matthew Nickerson, President, Safeco Insurance. “We hope Safeco’s #MY60 campaign will empower people with the tools to help them find an hour or any extra time in their day to do what makes them happiest.”

The survey also demonstrated the tug-pull feeling Americans have on how much time they spend on things they have-to-do versus things they want-to-do, with respondents aspiring to a near 50/50 split. However, the study shows a different story as respondents report actually spending two-thirds of their time on have-to-do activities as opposed to only 33 percent focusing on want-to-do activities.

When it comes to managing time, 66 percent of those surveyed believe they are only somewhat successful or not successful at all with their time management. In fact, only one-third of respondents feel that they successfully manage their time and complete daily to-do lists.

There are also negative consequences to not having enough hours in the day to get through everything. Over half of respondents admitted to using a negative behavior such as overeating to cope with not accomplishing everything they need to do. These behaviors are likely having a negative impact on relationships. One-quarter say they withdraw from other people and 24 percent become angry with others to cope.

“The best way to avoid negative behaviors stemming from not having enough time to do it all is to change your thinking about what needs to be done,” notes Alpert. “Carving out an hour in the day of ‘me’ time is essential to personal happiness.”

Alpert offers several tips to help find an hour a day to do more including:

Change your thinking. “I’m so busy” and “I don’t have time for anything” are negative comments that are sure to keep you feeling overwhelmed. Think more along the lines of making good use of the time that you do have or having perspective that you can only do so much in one day and to accomplish what’s reasonable for that given day. Empower yourself to think “can” and “will” instead of “can’t” and “have to.”

Track how you spend your time. Do this for one week. Many people are entirely unaware of what they do hour to hour and where the day goes. The simple exercise of noting what you’re doing each hour can have a huge impact. Track your time and know where you’re spending it.

Determine which tasks and activities are vital and which are optional. Structure other tasks around those that are vital. Schedule your day by doing the important tasks first, using the first 15 minutes of your morning to organize your work area. This is when you are freshest and energetic. So often the less important tasks get in the way of other things that need to be done which can be distracting. It’s often easier to do the things that aren’t as important, but fear can lead to procrastination and ends up keeping us stagnant.
