My son had to a  7 grade Latin Project he decided to make a Greek mythological creature of a Cerberus.  He had a great time doing making the dog.  It lived in a display case for a few months.  The Latin Teacher requested the project back for the next year,  so he could show the kids, what a project can look like it.    This is also a great project for a book report on Harry Potter.

The Best Fried rice using left over rice

I make fried rice I make 6 cups which is way too much for one meal for my family.  Left over rice is a great staple for other meals in my family.   I make rice every time I make Tacos as a great way to stretch a meal.  My family loves a little rice in taco or soft taco just like a Chipolte burrito.  Since I make 6 cups I know that we will have another Rice meal that week.  My family’s favorite is fried rice  which is a great way to use up left overs in a new meal.

The key to a great left over fried rice is the crispy part of the fried along with well done saute onions.    How do you get the rice crispy is tossing your left over rice in corn starch.

Netflix Series and TV Series worth watching

Netflix Series and TV Series worth watching

Netflix Series and TV Series worth watching:I really enjoy TV. I see it as my time to be quiet and relax. When I was in labor with him.. I was induced and it was not working, after a entire day of 15min contractions. I talked the nurse into bring  me back to a regular room so I could eat a hamburger and watch Rosewell on Tv (Rosewell was a Teen Scifi TV show starting a young Katherine Hegel). My doctor said I was going to lose my bed in labor and delivery. So I cut a deal I will go back to the labor floor after I watched Roswell. Seriously TV I delayed the birth of my son.. For a TV Show.
After my sons Birth in 2001 while staying at home, I was stressed out because I had no down time. AKA TV, because my infant took 2 hours to fall asleep. (Don’t judge I was a 1st time mother who nursed him to sleep and he transferred like crap.) My Husband for some reason never videotaped my shows.
Then I went on a business trip and a gentleman  the Mexico City Airport, told me about TVIO. I was a 1st generation used of Tivo .. Yep long before cable added DVR’s there was TV a DVR box with a lifetime membership. The idea of watching TV and skipping commercials was a god sent. Tivo was great but.. Technology changed and I moved on.. Enter my cable DVR, then
Well Hello Netflix
My TV addiction take a new level.. binge watching. I love a good series, made available to me quickly without having to wait weeks.. bonus. I have to actually stop myself from watching an entire season, because I get nothing done.
Yep laundry can wait for the Orange is the New Black. There must be a 12 step program for Netflix over users.. if so I need to Join. So I have doen the research for you my readers at the cost of my kids not have clean socks and dirty floors. Here are my recommendations for you to waste time and relax.

Netflix Series and TV Series worth watching:

  • Frankie and Gracie: Staring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda a smart series on women in their 60/70’s starting over after their husbands leave them for each other. This series is in its 1st season
  • Orange and the New Black: Is about a women’s prison. This sexually graphic drama plus a touch of humor with great character development. You can’t walk away as you become invested in these women’s lives as you root for them. 3 season available on NetFlix
  • Walking Dead from AMC on Netflix: This is a show my brother talked me into watching. I originally said no thank you Zombies. He said it is better than that you stop loosing sight of the Zombies and it become about the characters and how people change in the face of an apocalypse. I actually enjoyed watching this with my Husband and teenage Son we all would try to predict the future of the characters. 5 Seasons
  • House of Cards: This was a hard series for me to get into because it is a little slow at 1st. I loved the twists and turns the characters made. It is a show to watch slowly and enjoy.. a little bit does a long way. 3 season on netflix.
  • Shameless: This is HBO series. It is a very adult show (sex, volaice more) . I am amazed at the characters The story centers around a low income family in Detroit. Dad is a drunk and terrible father. The Older sister tries to hold the family together and all the Kids on track but she has her down falls. The Eldest brother is a Genius and trying to figure out if he is a mess or will he embrace his gifts. There is also a Gay brother. It is a amazing view of a family’s struggle and joy with what they have. You will spend time watching them thinking is this real? 5 Seasons
  • Wet Hot American Summer: The newest Netflix original Series with Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler and Bradley Copper It is about summer of these 20 something at a camp. It is a Prequel for a Movie before these actors were huge stars. I have not viewed it yet, but I am sure It will be well done. First 8 Episodes available

So that is it my favorite list of shows to enjoy this summer and beat the Heat inside and watching. What are your favorite Tv Series?

Finding Time for Happiness

girl reading

Finding Time for Happiness:  Everyday I am crazy busy (notice the name of my blog? )  and don’t have enough hours to accomplish all that I would like to do.   I would love a minute to read those stack of books I have sitting in the coner of my bedroom, or finish the quilt I have based up.  I am not alone in the this feeling.  The Long summer days are a natural time for Americans to re-focus their time to do more of what they enjoy, but it can still be challenging to make any extra time. In fact, according to a new survey by Safeco Insurance, more than four in five respondents agree they need an extra hour in the day with 70 percent admitting they would use that extra time to do something for themselves.

New Study Shows Every Hour Counts for Time-Crunched Americans’ Quest for Happiness

Safeco Insurance® Launches #MY60 to Encourage Finding an Hour a Day to Do More
The survey results showed that people are working longer hours, but 45 percent are realizing less happiness in their extended workdays. Nearly half say that finding just sixty minutes more in their day to do something they enjoy would make them happy and relaxed. Topping the list of activities for a “do more hour” were personal hobbies (40%), having alone or personal time (29%) and trying something new (22%).

With over half of respondents admitting to feeling more inspired to find free time during summer, Safeco is launching the #MY60 campaign to encourage people to take back 60 minutes of their day over a 60-day period. Safeco is inviting consumers to visit www.safeco.com/MY60 to find tips and checklists on how to create and maximize a “do more hour” for themselves. The site will also feature expert advice from Jonathan Alpert, a Manhattan-based psychotherapist and author of the book “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days.”

“Part of Safeco’s mission is to help both our customers and independent agents get more out of life from getting more involved in their communities to tackling a new challenge,” said Matthew Nickerson, President, Safeco Insurance. “We hope Safeco’s #MY60 campaign will empower people with the tools to help them find an hour or any extra time in their day to do what makes them happiest.”

The survey also demonstrated the tug-pull feeling Americans have on how much time they spend on things they have-to-do versus things they want-to-do, with respondents aspiring to a near 50/50 split. However, the study shows a different story as respondents report actually spending two-thirds of their time on have-to-do activities as opposed to only 33 percent focusing on want-to-do activities.

When it comes to managing time, 66 percent of those surveyed believe they are only somewhat successful or not successful at all with their time management. In fact, only one-third of respondents feel that they successfully manage their time and complete daily to-do lists.

There are also negative consequences to not having enough hours in the day to get through everything. Over half of respondents admitted to using a negative behavior such as overeating to cope with not accomplishing everything they need to do. These behaviors are likely having a negative impact on relationships. One-quarter say they withdraw from other people and 24 percent become angry with others to cope.

“The best way to avoid negative behaviors stemming from not having enough time to do it all is to change your thinking about what needs to be done,” notes Alpert. “Carving out an hour in the day of ‘me’ time is essential to personal happiness.”

Alpert offers several tips to help find an hour a day to do more including:

Change your thinking. “I’m so busy” and “I don’t have time for anything” are negative comments that are sure to keep you feeling overwhelmed. Think more along the lines of making good use of the time that you do have or having perspective that you can only do so much in one day and to accomplish what’s reasonable for that given day. Empower yourself to think “can” and “will” instead of “can’t” and “have to.”

Track how you spend your time. Do this for one week. Many people are entirely unaware of what they do hour to hour and where the day goes. The simple exercise of noting what you’re doing each hour can have a huge impact. Track your time and know where you’re spending it.

Determine which tasks and activities are vital and which are optional. Structure other tasks around those that are vital. Schedule your day by doing the important tasks first, using the first 15 minutes of your morning to organize your work area. This is when you are freshest and energetic. So often the less important tasks get in the way of other things that need to be done which can be distracting. It’s often easier to do the things that aren’t as important, but fear can lead to procrastination and ends up keeping us stagnant.

Arden Drama Summer Camp Review

Arden Summer Camp Review:   My daughter had the opportunity to go to Arden Theater’s Drama Summer camp.   She loved this camp,  I really can’t say enough hope much my daughter enjoyed every moment.  She beyond excited to attend the 1st day, only to return at the end of the day bubbling about how awesome, amazing, and fun the day of drama was.

The campers days included a fun schedule of theater classes.   The children had acting classes with included improvisation,  script writing, dance, and movement.    My daughter adored Sam the acting teacher.  Stating unequivocally Sam was “the best teacher” she’s ever had even at school.  She would chatter on about Sam for the 20+ minute drive home.

Arden Drama Summer Camp Review

The campers  learned different type of dances from the shuffle, 2 step and more.   I was able to observe a dance class with the younger children(grades 1st-4th.)  I love photographing the pure joy that came out of every child it the dance room. They had a real music teacher who sang the songs and played them on the piano instead of using a recorded song, it was like a rehearsal at a adult theater.

Arden Drama Summer Camp Review

The  theme of the week was Superheroes. Which we loved.  The children participated in a craft class, they created their own superhero identity.  My daughter designed her own superhero persona named “Luna Wolf” complete with emblem and costume design.    She was so happy to show me the crafts she created at the end of the week.

Each Day a group children create a scene and preform the scene in front of their camp-mates.   At the end of a groups performance the other children shared a positive comments about their peers performances.  Which gave all the children to preform at a level the were comfortable with and get feedback in a safe place.  By the end of the week, my daughter was gaining real drama skills.   With these new found acting abilities,  I could see them translates to creating a confidant public speaker. The Arden Staff does a wonderful job of nurture growth in a positive creative way.   Bravo !

Arden Drama Summer Camp Review

As a parent I think the Arden Drama camp is amazing.  From the moment you walk in the building the helper escorts your child to a classroom,  every member of the staff is  warm and inviting.  The staff shares the daily schedule with you in the form of a handout.  I found the handout to be a great allowing for actually talking points with your child.  My daughter could  give me a full review over dinner of her action packed day of drama camp.

Arden summer camp review

The Drama camp was held at the Hamilton Family Arts Center  which is the Arden’s Drama School location right next store to the Theater.  The building is new and spotless.  Great big spaces that allow for movement.

As a parent, my biggest concern was having to park to get my child everyday (hassle of looking for a spot, parking fees.. ect).     The Arden Staff turned those concerns in to a non-issue.

Drop Off: The front of the school was a loading zone, you can run in and drop your child off.

Pick up procedure for the end of the day of camp was great (I never parked.)  End of the day pick up:  The BEST, you assign a “password” for your child at the start of camp.  Then end of each day the Arden has a “drive by pick up” at the main theater.  A counselor comes out and asks the child’s name and the child’s password.  Only the people on your pick up are on the list and must have the password to pick up your child.   The Staff verifies password & adults name,  then the Arden Staff Member walks your child outside, and puts them in your car.  Simple and Efficient.. no parking needed.

My daughter was happy and giggling every day. Check out my daughters full review of the week in the video.

Arden Summer Camp Review: It was a amazing experience. Any child will be lucky to attend this camp,  it is a fun learning experience that allows a child to grow and develop in a interactive way.   My daughter is already asking to go back next year.

How to take pictures of runners for beginners

How to take pictures of runners for beginners

How to take pictures of runners for beginners : I was asked to photography a 5 K run this weekend.  Normally I do more posed portraits and  I love doing them.  I was not sure I could get the essence of the runners as they worked and showed there athletic ablity.   At the bottom of the post are my tips for you to get those cant miss shots of your family and friends in action in all those 5K and marathons.

kids running

I am not the most athletic person, when  I went  running down the hill after them at the start in 85+ degree heat was panting like a dog.  I was more then happy when they left  for the course and I could pick my spot from where to capture the finish.  The race event was a summer soaker 5K so wet and fun as everyone got sprayed by a fire truck.   My finish location was downwind of the fire truck was nice, loved the overspray.

boy running

I took 571 pictures and only a few were duds.  I loved shooting everyone as they ran through to the finish.

How to take pictures of runners for beginners :

  • To get the action shots I focused on the Stomach of the athletes, faces are hard to shoot on moving targets.  Make sure camera is focus to avoid blurry pictures.
  • Take test shots  and check them of other runners to make sure you get the best shot of your runner.. If you runner might win find someone to stand at a location they might come across the finish.. the Fast runners Take 17-18mins so you have a few minutes to set up
  • Use eye visual and not digital screen if your camera has one.. looking through the hole will always take better shoots then viewing through digital screen
  • If you can rest you elbows on your chest/stomach it will stabilize your picture rather then extending your arms and holding camera away from your body.  (squeeze you boob together)   This will help with blurry photos. (if you have a tripod even better)
  • Use a fixed lens rather then a lens you have to zoom in at out, a variable lens slows down the focus time I used my fixed  50MM Nikon lens.
  • Find a Position for you to stand that is close but not in runners way
  • Take the picture on a large format (aka High resolution high Pixels) this allows you the best large quality for cropping (set camera for “Fine” in menu)
  • Set camera for fast pictures –  Use the preset “action” Mode on the camera (the little guy running icon on dial) or a quick shutter speed 800
  • Take Multiple shots hold the shutter (the silver button down) of set for multi photos. You can always delete later

  10. Cooks tool must have wok, cast iron pan, Dutch oven, non stick pan
  11. Cast Iron pans do not put in dishwasher,  the older the pan the better season with oil and air dry

He also spoke about a creating a spiritual relationship with your food. That the best food invokes emotion or a memory.  He mentioned if you grew up the 80’s it might be tacos.. I had to laugh because that reminded me of my childhood.  Taco night is the best.
